    • An impact sensing system for a powered roll-up door combines an electrical switch and a breakaway coupling. To avoid damage or injury resulting from the door's roll-up curtain accidentally closing upon an obstacle or something striking the curtain, the breakaway coupling responds to such a collision by breaking away, which releases a lower portion of the curtain from between its two vertical guide tracks. Each breakaway coupling includes a set of electrical contacts that make or break in response to the coupling breaking away. When the curtain's lower portion becomes effectively derailed from its guide track, the electrical contacts disable continued operation of the door to prevent the door's drive motor from jamming the curtain. In some embodiments, the breakaway coupling is releasably held together by way of magnetic attraction between two coupling segments, with one electrical contact on each segment to comprise one set of functional contacts.

    • The invention relates to a method for operating an adjusting drive in a motor vehicle. Said method comprises the following steps: measuring the actuating force exerted by the adjusting drive, comparing said actuating force with a limit force, reversing the adjusting drive when the limit force is exceeded. According to a first method, the measured values of the actuating force are filtered before they are compared in order to suppress any rapid changes of the actuating forces in relation to the distance already covered by the adjusting drive, while the vehicle is moving. According to a second method, said measured values are not filtered at all while the vehicle is stationary with the engine switched off. Rapid changes are therefore suppressed less in the second method than in the first method. The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the inventive method.

    • An obstruction detection system utilizes a segmented optical detector (22, 54, 74) and detector-specific signal processing (24) to optically detect the presence of a small object within a defined plane and to screen out interfering signals. In one application, the obstruction detection system is utilized with an automatically closing window (10) to prevent small objects, such as fingers, from being pinched by the window (10) as the window (10) is being closed. In one embodiment of the obstruction detection system, the segmented optical detector (22, 54, 74) includes a series of segmented detector elements (76) that are generally perpendicular to the defined plane. In another embodiment of the obstruction detection system, the segmented optical detector includes segmented detector elements that are generally parallel to the defined plane.
