    • The present invention relates to a method of preparing a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), which are used for the recognition of target molecules, comprising: co-polymerising at least one functional monomer and at least one cross-linking monomer in the presence of at least one template, wherein oxyanions are used as template and the steric and/or electronic structure of the template is at least partly analogous to the target molecule. The target molecules may be nitro-containing compounds, such as nitroaromatic compounds, or lactones. MIPs selective for explosive nitro-aromatic substances may be produced without handling these hazardous compounds. The invention further relates to a method of determining if a sample contains nitro-containing compounds, such as nitroaromatic compounds, or lactones, MIPs selective for nitro-containing compounds and/or lactones, especially nitro-aromatic compounds and a kit, comprising a molecularly imprinted polymer selective for nitro-aromatic compounds and/or lactones. The invention also relates to use of isosteric and/or isoelectronic oxyanions for the production of MIPs for recognition of nitro-containing compounds, especially nitroaromatic compounds, and lactones.

    • The invention relates to a method for the production of a template-textured material by synthesis of a template-textured polymer (TGP) by performing crosslinking polymerization of functional monomers on a carrier in the presence of a template. The invention is characterized in that a carrier having a thin polymer layer on the surface thereof is modified with a reaction mixture consisting of a polymerization initiator, a template, a functional monomer, a crosslinking agent, a solvent and/or a buffer. Polymerization is initiated after the reaction mixture has been absorbed in the thin polymer layer and continued until the absorption capacity of the thin polymer layer for the template-textured polymer (TGP) is achieved. The template is then optionally removed during a final step. The carrier used is selected in such a way that it cannot absorb the reaction solution. The materials disclosed in the invention are characterized by high binding specificity and selectivity for the template.

    • Polymer-metal ion composites and methods are provided for reversibly binding target compounds using such composites. Broadly, the composites comprise and amorphous polymer matrix having a plurality of channels with metal ion-ligand complexes immobilized therein. The composites are formed by polymerizing a polymeric moiety with a metal complex template in the presence of a solvent. The template is formed of a metal ion having a ligand bonded thereto as well as to polymer matrix. The metal ion and ligand are selected to yield a composite having a particular chemical and/or physical environment around the metal sites, depending upon the desired end use. Preferred metal ions include ions of the transition metals. The composites can be contacted with target compounds for reversibly binding the compounds. Exemplary compounds include those selected from the group consisting of oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, compounds having an atom of P, S or N, and mixtures thereof. The compound can be released from the composites at the desired time and location by heating the compound-containing composite.
