    • An advanced balanced RF power amplifier circuit is provided The RF power amplifier has a pair of RF amplification paths (19,21) constructed to efficiently operate in a high-power mode. When instructed to operate in a low-power mode, one of the amplification paths (21) is deactivated, and optionally, an impedance device (53) is also set to operate at a low-power impedance value. With only path (19) operating in low-power mode, the network RF topology has changed from the topology of the high-power mode. This new topology provides increased impedance on the active RF amplification path as compared to when both RF amplification paths were active. This increased impedance causes the RF power amplifier to operate more efficiently in its low-power mode. Depending on the specific application and target performance, the impedance may be sufficiently increased simply by deactivating one of the RF amplification paths, and in other cases it may be desirable to switch an active or passive impedance device to operate at a low-power impedance. The impedance device enables further adjustment and tuning of the impednace in the low-power topology.

    • According to an exemplary embodiment, an amplification module (200) includes a bias circuit (204) coupled to an input of an amplifier (202), where the bias circuit (204) is configured to charge the input of the amplifier (202) to a final bias voltage. The amplification module (200) further includes a fast charge circuit (210) configured to provide a low impedance path (246) between the bias circuit (204) and the input of the amplifier (202) when a voltage at the input of the amplifier (202) is less than the final bias voltage, thereby reducing an enable time of the amplifier (202). The fast charge circuit (210) is further configured to open the low impedance path (246) when the voltage at the input of the amplifier (202) is substantially equal to the final bias voltage. The fast charge circuit (210) includes a comparator (224) configured to cause the low impedance path (246) to open when the voltage at the input of the amplifier (202) is substantially equal to a reference voltage.

    • The present invention teaches a variety of driver amplifiers (300) having a transmit mode suitable for driving the load resistance (Rload) of a network with an amplified version of the input signal (Vin), and a standby mode wherein the driver amplifier (300) consumes substantially no current and isolates the load resistance (Rload) from the input signal (Vin). These amplifiers (300) are also characterized in that during transitions back and forth between standby mode and transmit mode, a minimum of standby transient leaks out onto the network. Further, the noise power delivered to the network in standby mode is substantially minimized, the remaining noise being primarily due to thermal noise produced by a resistor (R1) utilized to provide matched termination to the network.
