    • Logic may reduce overhead in communications that include pilot tones in symbols by establishing a predefined pattern of subcarriers on which the pilot tones are transmitted and including the pilot tones in L out of every N symbols in the communications. Logic may implement communications in accordance with the predefined pattern of subcarriers by inserting N minus L symbols between symbols with pilot tones on each of the subcarriers of the predefined pattern of subcarriers or by inserting tones other than pilot tones on pilot subcarriers in N minus L out of every N symbols. Logic may determine channel state information along with carrier frequency and phase tracking information from pilot tones in the symbols. And logic may determine channel state information for symbols that do not include pilot tones by calculating channel estimates based upon channel estimates of adjacent subcarriers and/or by previous channel estimates of the pilot subcarriers.

    • A system and method for aggregation of a plurality of wireless communication signals in a common radio frequency transmitter. A multiple subchannel multiplexed (MSM) signal within a frequency band, and having a communication protocol with pilot signals estimating a channel state and efficient signal demodulation with a mobile receiver is combined with another signal. An automated digital processor at the transmitter modifies the MSM to meet at least one fitness criterion of the combined signal, selected from among alternatives that will maintain good reception of all transmitted signals within system protocols, without requiring transmitting additional side information specifying the modification. The range of alternates include modifications that disrupt the pilot signals. The fitness criterion may include minimizing the peak-to-average power ratio of the combination, and a signal modification may comprise a cyclic permutation of a portion of the time-domain representation of a signal, while maintaining compatibility with prior pilot signals

    • A ranging procedure is performed using interference cancellation using preamble messages from a plurality of objects, each of which includes a pre-defined orthogonal design coded modulation patterns. A channel for an object may be estimated using the pre-defined orthogonal design coded modulation patterns in the preamble messages received from objects to remove interference of the preamble message received from other objects. A range to an object may be determined based on a determined delay in the preamble message from that object. The range may be used to assist in determining the position of the object. The pre-defined preamble message may be transmitted by receiving a schedule for an access point in a network for a ranging procedure and periodically transmitting a pre-defined preamble message for the ranging procedure, the pre-defined preamble message includes an orthogonal design coded modulation pattern.

    • Embodiments are provided for a cooperative cross-tier precoding (CTP) and intra-tier precoding (ITP) scheme for two-tier networks. The cooperative precoding scheme allows exploitation of extra transmit dimensions at the second-tier network, thereby increasing the achievable throughput at the second-tier network. The embodiments allow significant increase in throughput of the second-tier network due to both CTP between the second-tier network and the first-tier network, and efficient ITP between the second-tier network transmitters. The increase in transmit dimension allows for efficient linear inra-tier precoding, which significantly reduces the intra-tier interference. A processor coupled to the second-tier network transmitters is configured to perform CTP of transmit signals in the second-tier network for cancelling signal interference from the second-tier network transmitters to a first-tier network receiver, thereby generating CTP matrix information. The processor then performs, using the CTP matrix information, ITP for reducing intra-signal interference from the second-tier transmitters to corresponding second-tier receivers.
