    • Systems, devices and methods for updating link adaptations in multi-carrier modulated signals between an access point (AP) and a wireless local area network (WLAN) station (STA) include (are configured for) periodically transmitting a channel sounding signal from the AP. The STA receives each unsolicited channel sounding signal and evaluates the current channel conditions between the AP and STA. The AP adjusts a rate of transmission of the channel sounding signals in accordance with the channel coherence time so that the channel estimates performed by the STA will be valid within the time varying characteristics of the channel. Depending on the length of the coherence time for network environment, the channel sounding signals may be AP beacons, low overhead signal fragments with no payload, or a combination of both.

    • Logic may reduce overhead in communications that include pilot tones in symbols by establishing a predefined pattern of subcarriers on which the pilot tones are transmitted and including the pilot tones in L out of every N symbols in the communications. Logic may implement communications in accordance with the predefined pattern of subcarriers by inserting N minus L symbols between symbols with pilot tones on each of the subcarriers of the predefined pattern of subcarriers or by inserting tones other than pilot tones on pilot subcarriers in N minus L out of every N symbols. Logic may determine channel state information along with carrier frequency and phase tracking information from pilot tones in the symbols. And logic may determine channel state information for symbols that do not include pilot tones by calculating channel estimates based upon channel estimates of adjacent subcarriers and/or by previous channel estimates of the pilot subcarriers.

    • An apparatus, a method and one or more tangible computer-readable non-transitory storage media. The apparatus comprises a processor and a receive module configured to be executed by the processor to receive a data packet via a wireless communication channel, the packet including one or more pilot signals assigned to one or more corresponding subcarrier frequencies of the packet, the one or more pilot signals arranged to sweep through at least a portion of the plurality of subcarrier frequencies as a function of time. The apparatus further includes a channel estimator module configured to be executed by the processor to determine an initial channel estimation for the communication channel, and to further update a channel estimation for the communication channel using at least a portion of the pilot signals of the packet based on channel conditions.
