    • This invention relates to a pin bone removal system adapted to automatically removing a pin bone area of a fish fillet when conveyed by a conveyor after undergoing a cutting process, where the pin bone area has been cut from the remaining part of the fish fillet. The system includes a conveyor system having at least two side by side arranged conveyor belts extending from a first end to a second end. The first end acts as a receiving end where the fish fillet is received with the cut pin bone area. The internal arrangement of the side by side arranged conveyor belts is such that at the first end the conveyor belts are substantially adjacent to each other and at a position downstream from the first end the side by side arranged conveyor belts are spaced apart. The transversal position of the fish fillet in relation to the first end is adjusted such that when the fish fillet arrives at the downstream position the position of the cut pin bone area is such that the cut pin bone area falls through the space while the remaining part of the fish fillet remains on the first and/or second conveyor belts.

    • An apparatus and method for displaying the weight or cost of an uncut selected segment of an item involves passing a position indicating member over the item lying on a support surface. The position indicating member carves one or more sensors which generate signals corresponding to succeeding cross sectional contours of the item as the member is traversed along the item from a reference position to a selected other position over this item, defining the selected segment of the item. At the same time, a motion detector arrangement preferably comprised of one or more microelectromechanical (MEMS) accelerometer devices generates signals corresponding to motion of the position indicator support member as it is moved along the item. These signals are processed in a signal processor to determine the volume of the uncut selected segment of the item lying between selected successive positions of the indication member. Each of these cumulative volume determinations are converted into numeric weight or to contemporaneously provide an on-looking consumer weight or price information before a particular segment is cut from the item. A visible light band is projected from the sensor bar onto a section price values based on the density factor for the particular type of item, whereby numeric weight and price values (based on weight) are displayed as the member is traversed along the item, thus enabling the operator of the item to clearly show the selected segment bounds corresponding to the numeric display to the onlooker.

    • An apparatus and method for displaying the weight or cost of segments of an irregularly shaped item involves passing a sensor bar supported above a supporting surface over the item lying on the surface. A compact hand-held embodiment of the sensor bar enables the operator to move the sensor bar in various linear or non-linear motions over the item surface as the sensor bar moves laterally across the item surface while the sensor bar support posts remain in constant contact with the supporting surface. The sensor bar contains one or more sensors which generate signals corresponding to the height of the item as the sensor bar traverses the item. At the same time, a displacement detector arrangement generates signals corresponding to displacement of the sensor bar relative to the support surface. These signals are processed in a signal processor to determine the volume of an uncut segment of the item lying behind the sensor bar at successive positions. Each of these cumulative volume determinations may be continuously converted into numeric weight values based on the density factor for the particular type of item, whereby numeric weight and cost values (based on weight) are continuously displayed as the sensor bar is stroked over the item, thus enabling the operator to accommodate an on-looking consumer's specific requests as per the particular portion desired based on the physical appearance, weight, and cost of an item before the item is cut.

    • A conveyor (12) moves a workpiece (WP) past an x-ray source (14) to detect existence and location of any undesirable material included in the workpiece, such as bones, fat, metal, etc. Thereafter, the conveyor carries the workpiece further, wherein a cutter (22) segments the detected undesirable material from the workpiece into a segmented portion (SP) having a visually recognizable shape, such as square, round, triangular, etc. A worker stationed downstream of the cutter along the conveyor may then easily spot the segmented portion (SP) in a recognizable shape and offload the segmented portion from the conveyor, while leaving the rest of the workpice (WP) on the conveyor for further processing. Alternatively, a pickup device (24) may be used to automatically offload the segmented portion from the conveyor. A computer (18) keeps track of the locations of the workpiece and the segmented portion at all times.
