    • An apparatus and method for displaying the weight or cost of segments of an irregularly shaped item (Fig. 1 item 14) involves passing a sensor bar (Fig I, item 16) supported above a supporting surface (Fig. 1 item 12) over the item lying on the surface. A compact hand-held embodiment of the sensor bar enables the operator to move the sensor bar in various linear or non-linear motions over the item surface as the sensor bar moves laterally across the item surface while the sensor bar support posts (Fig. 1 items 20, 22) remain in constant contact with the supporting surface. The sensor bar contains one or more sensors (Fig. 1 item 38) which generate signals corresponding to the height of the item as the sensor bar traverses the item. At the same time, a displacement detector arrangement (Fig. 1 items 20A, 22A) generates signals corresponding to displacement of the sensor bar relative to the support surface. These signals are processed in a signal processor (Fig. 1 item 30) to determine the volume of an uncut segment of the item lying behind the sensor bar at successive positions. Each of these cumulative volume determinations may be continuously converted into numeric weight values based on the density factor for the particular type of item, whereby numeric weight and cost values (based on weight) are continuously displayed as the sensor bar is stroked over the item, thus enabling the operator to accommodate an on-looking consumer's specific requests as per the particular portion desired based on the physical appearance, weight, and cost of an item before the item is cut.

    • A system in which a succession of products (12) to (16) traverse a gap between two conveyors (10, 18), comprises a ring (32) carrying an array of one or more equi-spaced laser displacement transducers (36-42) connected to a computer (48). The ring is disposed perpendicular to the direction of product movement, such that each product (e.g. a log of food) passes through its central region, the ring being rotatable in a continuous or oscillatory manner. Signals received by the computer from the transducers are stored and computed to determine the shape and/or size of the product to enable the product to be cut into an optimum number of pieces. A method is described for determining volume and thereby weight using mean density values for the products, of irregularly shaped bulk product, particularly fresh meat.

    • The object of the invention is a method for cutting meat or equivalent into cuttings of required size. Cutting meat or equivalent elastic material into cuttings of specific size is generally based on, at random eye-measure, which results in cuttings of non exact size. In the method according to the invention the required volume deficiency is drawn into the liquid space (2) behind the cutting edge (10) with the help of piston (1). Whilst cutting, this volume deficiency behind the cutting edge (10) is hence filled by meat (5) or equivalent. The membrane (3) prevents the liquid from bulging outside the adjusted volume to the meat side of the cutting edge. This way the cutting edge always cuts the desired volume of the meat or equivalent material.
