    • A system for locating movable objects and detecting the failure of the object to visit a designated area within a predetermined time, including a base unit (10), a transceiver (12) attached to the movable object (22), and a portable locating device (32) having a directional antenna. The base unit (10) includes a transmitter circuit (14) which generates a first signal (16) for substantially continuous transmission within a zone (18), which encompasses the designated area. When the movable object (22) enters the zone (18), the receiver portion (48) of the transceiver (12) receives the first signal (16) and resets a timer (58) within the transceiver (12). If the movable object (22) fails to revisit the zone (18) within the predetermined time, based on predictions of the movable object's movements, the timer (58) times out and switches the transceiver transmitter (52) into an active mode wherein the transceiver (12) emits a second signal (26). The second signal (26), which may contain information identifying the movable object (22), can be detected by using the locating device (32) to track down and recover the movable object (22). In an alternate embodiment, a fixed mast-mounted locator receiver (34) detects the second signal (26) and provides information regarding the approximate location of the movable object (22).

    • A housebreaking reward system. The housebreaking reward system includes a moisture sensitive pad, a moisture detector, a reward dispenser, and an optional handheld transmitter. The moisture sensitive pad is constructed to contain and hold fluids (e.g., urine) deposited by an animal and is laid down at location where it is acceptable for an animal to eliminate. The moisture detector is selectively connectable to sensing elements on the moisture sensitive pad to detect when fluid is deposited. If fluid is detected, the moisture sensitive detector signals the reward dispenser to reward the animal for appropriate elimination. At least a portion the moisture sensitive pad is disposable to facilitate easy cleanup of the appropriate elimination area. After one or more fluid deposits, the moisture detector is disconnected from the sensing elements, and the used moisture sensitive pad is discarded.

    • Enhanced methods and systems for human-pet communication are described. Example embodiments provide an Internet Canine Communication System ("ICCS"). The ICCS facilitates remote communication and interaction with between a dog and its owner, caretaker, trainer, family member, or the like. The ICCS may include a base station or similar device that is configured to deliver treats to a dog and to transmit audio/visual communication between the dog and a remote client device operated by a human user. The ICCS may also facilitate training the dog to utilize the ICCS to communicate with the user, such as by answering calls from or initiating calls to the remote client device of the user.
