    • A surface-mount pointing device (10) controls the movement of an object on a display screen. The device has a base (50) and a shaft (12). The shaft is mounted to the base. Several sensors (R1-R4) are mounted on the base and around the shaft for sensing the amount of strain in the base that is created in response to a force applied on the shaft by a user. Conductors (56) are mounted on the base and electrically connected to the sensors. Electrical leads (60) are electrically and mechanically connected to the conductors. The electrical leads are shaped for mounting on the surface of a circuit board. The electrical leads each have a bifurcated inner terminal (61) end that is electrically connected to the conductors. The bifurcated inner terminal end fits over and grips an edge of the base. An outer terminal end extends outwardly of the base and is shaped for mounting on the surface of a circuit board (21).

    • A hermetically sealable control element has a lever tared by a counter-weight (34) in unstable equilibrium. The lever consists of a handle (12) and of a pressure-transmitting element (15) form-fittingly suspended in a housing (14) so as to swivel therein. The pressure-transmitting element (15) is supported with no clearance in the housing (14) against at least one force sensor (25) that reacts practically without delay and is in turn supported against the housing (14). When several such control element housings (14) are superimposed in cascade, the projecting handles (12) are coaxially nested into each other with a small radial clearance, whereas their lever relationships in relation to their suspensions (11) are identical. Variable, highly reproducible and dynamic controls may thus be given along several axes simultaneously without any delay, by exercising with the fingers of one hand a transverse pressure on the handles (12) that project out of each other.

    • A thermally stable, mass-producible pointing device (10) producing an analog signal proportional to an applied force comprises actuator (20), including an arm (22) and a force transfer member (26), a connector (44), and a sensor (50). The connector maintains the force transfer member in contact with the sensor yet allows the force transfer member to change dimensions with ambient temperature without inducing stresses detectable by the sensor. In a preferred embodiment, the connector comprises an elastomeric adhesive and the sensor comprises a force-sensing resistor. The force transfer member is prevented from coming out of the assembly either by a retainer (12) comprising a shell or a potting compound retaining the force transfer member but permitting thermal expansion or contraction of the force transfer member. The force transfer member typically has a rounded or bevelled bottom surface (28) so the actuator rocks under an applied force. The area of the bottom surface of the force transfer member transferring the force changes as the actuator rocks, and the force is transferred to the sensor at a single contiguous area whose position changes in response to a change in force.
