    • A well servicing system includes a computer-based system that monitors pumping or other service operations at a well site and monitors deliveries and withdrawals of chemicals at a bulk storage station. A GPS device or other location identifier provides a location value that identifies the location of the service vehicle. A GPS reading is triggered by actuation of the vehicle's parking brake, and the location value is recorded in association with a process-related transducer value. The transducer value is based on the service vehicle performing some type of service operation either at the well site or at the bulk storage station.

    • A method and apparatus for displaying depth of positional data with tubing analysis data obtained by instruments analyzing tubing sections being withdrawn from a well includes an apparatus for communicably linking an encoder or other positional or depth sensors to the tubing analysis data processor. In addition, sensors capable of detected collars holding pieces of tubing section together can transmit signals to the analysis data processor that a collar has been detected and insert collar location information into the analysis data. Furthermore, information based on the length of the individual pieces of tubing of the data from the encoder or other positional sensor can be analyzed or associated with the analysis data and displayed with the analysis data by overlaying a depth component on a display of the analysis data.

    • An instrument, such as a wall-thickness, rod-wear, or pitting sensor, can monitor tubing as a field service crew extracts the tubing from an oil well or inserts the tubing into the well. A computer-based system can process data from the instrument to evaluate the validity of the data. Validating the data can comprise determining whether any features, structures, or patterns present in the data correlate with actual tubing defects or were caused by a condition unrelated to tubing quality, such as signal noise. The computer-based system can also analyze the data to deduce information about the performance of the well or to determine the well's operating state or status. For example, the data analysts can determine whether the well 's fluids have a chemical condition that should be treated or whether a detrimental harmonic oscillation has been occurring in the well's mechanical pumping system.

    • The brake system includes a brake lever independent of, but capable of rotating about the same point as a bell crank. Upon receiving a downward force, a member extending from the lever strikes a portion of the bell crank and generates a force that cause the bell crank to rotate. Rotational action of the bell crank transfers rotational energy to an equalizer bar thorough a linkage system. The equalizer bar's rotation increases or decreases tension on brake bands that slow a tubing drum. A cylinder can activate and cause the equalizer bar to rotate, applying tension to the brake bands and slowing the drum. Rotational energy is transferred back to the bell crank through the linkage. The rotational energy is absorbed by a spring positioned between the bell crank and the brake lever, thereby reducing the amount of sudden force passed through the brake lever to an operator.

    • This invention discloses a process which when properly used, automates the hydrostatic testing of casing and/or tubing in a will. An electronic processor with programmable logic provides diagnostics, alarming, and process automation functionality to the process. Current downhole tools and pumps can be used to insure conformance to API specifications, however the processor would sense that a specified target pressure has been reached and start an internal clock. After a specified period of time, the pressure would again be analyzed and compared to the original start pressure. If the decline is within specified limits, one alarm is given and recorded. If the decline in pressure is above the limits, another type alarm could he displayed, heard, and recorded. A PLC can also be incorporated to perform such tasks as starting the pump, closing and opening surface valves, and stopping the pump.

    • A method for evaluating rod quality and wellbore dynamics includes receiving information about the rod size and tong type for a rod pulling operation. Expected breakout pressures can be determined based on the rod size and/or tong type and can be input into an evaluation system. Upper and lower limits for acceptable rod breakout pressures can be calculated based on the expected breakout pressure and/or rod size. Actual rod breakout pressures can be evaluated while pulling rods from a well and compared to the upper and lower limits. Rod breakout pressures below the lower limit or above the upper limit can generate an alarm notifying a rig operator to evaluate the condition of the rod to determine if the rod can be reused. The rod breakout pressures can be recorded as breakout pressure data for further evaluation, including determinations of improper rod make-up and poor well conditions.

    • A scanner instrument used for scanning tubing that is being placed into an oil well or being removed from the oil well can be calibrated during retrieval of tubing from the well. Calibrating the tube scanner includes scanning a tubing standard and comparing the data from the standard scan to the known characteristics of the standard. The relationship between the scanned data and the known characteristics, can be computed. The relationship between the scanned data and the known characteristics can be used as the calibration function for the scanner. Calibrating the tube scanner can also include scanning a string of tubing segment and then adjusting the data collected. The adjustment is based upon equalizing the data peaks that occur in the scan data at the coupling joints between tube segments..

    • The present invention is directed to incrementing a well service rig in such a manner that activity-based and/or time-based for the well site is recorded. The invention contemplates that the acquired data can be transmitted in near real-time or periodically via wired, wireless, satellite or physical transfer such as by memory module to a data center preferably controlled by the work-over rig owner, but alternatively controlled by the well owner or another. The data can thereafter be used to provide the customer in various forms ranging from a detailed invoice to a searchable, secure web-based database. With such information, the customer can schedule other services at the well site. Further, the customer will have access to detailed data on the actual service performed and can. The present invention fosters a synergistic relationship among the customer and the service companies that promotes a safe environment by monitoring crew work activities and equipment speeds; improving productivity; reducing operation expenses through improved job processes; and better data management and reduced operational failures.
