    • A papermakers fabric (10) is woven from machine direction yarns (11, 19, 20) and one or more layers of cross machine direction yarns (12-18). The cross machine direction yarns (12-18) in at least one of the layers comprise relatively large (12, 13, 16, 17) and small (14, 15, 18) yarns. The machine and cross machine direction yarns (11, 19, 20) are arranged such that the machine direction yarns (11, 19, 20) define outer floats or knuckles at the surfaces of the fabric and inner floats or knuckles in the body of the fabric around small cross machine direction yarns (14, 15, 18) provided in one of the cross machine direction yarn layers. The parts of the machine direction yarns provided at one surface defining the inner floats or knuckles do not extend to the plane of the obverse surface of the fabric.

    • A base fabric for press felts and a press felt incorporating that base fabric which includes an assembly of three or more separately woven fabric layers (10, 20, 30). Each of the woven fabric layers making up the base fabric assembly is a single or multilayer fabric, and they may be of the same or different weave patterns. The three or more fabric layers (10, 20, 30) are assembled, one above the other and needled together with at least one batt layer on the papermaking surface of the felt. Preferably, the yarns on the top surface of the top fabric (10) will, by virtue of the weave of the fabric, have long floats in the machine and/or cross machine direction to provide good paper web support. The bottom (30) and intermediate fabric (20) layers may also have long cross machine direction floats on their top surfaces to support the fabric or fabrics above. In a preferred embodiment, the yarns (11, 12) making up the top fabric layer (10) will be relatively finer than those making up the intermediate layer (21, 22) and similarly, the yarns making up the intermediate layer will be relatively finer than those making up the bottom fabric layer (31, 32).

    • An improved papermaker's forming fabric is described in which a 14 or 16 shaft weave design is used. This design uses a construction in which the larger cross direction yarns on the machine side of the fabric float under at least 10 machine direction yarns. The binding points for these large-diameter cross direction yarns lie directly under a four-yarn float of paper side cross direction yarns. Further, the machine direction yarns float over only two adjacent cross direction yarns, at a point substantially halfway between the machine side binding points. This construction permits the use of very large cross direction machine side strands, without compromising the drainage capabilities of the fabric and wire mark propensity. The invention is particulaly useful in fabric designs where extra cross direction floater yarns are included on the paper side of the fabric, in which case the machine side binding points are located under the larger of the paper side cross direction yarns.

    • A backside textured papermaking belt is disclosed which is comprised of a framework and a reinforcing structure. The framework has a first surface which defines the paper-contacting side of the belt, a second surface opposite the first surface, and conduits which extend between first and second surfaces of the belt. The first surface of the framework has a paper side network formed therein which defines the conduits. The second surface of the framework has a backside network with passageways that provide surface texture irregularities in the backside network. The papermaking belt is made by applying a coating of photosensitive resinous material to a reinforcing structure which has opaque portions, and then exposing the photosensitive resinous material to light of an activating wavelength through a mask which has transparent and opaque regions and also through the reinforcing structure. A process for making paper products is also disclosed which involves applying a fluid pressure differential from a vaccum source through the belt to a partially-formed embryonic web of papermaking fibers. The fibers in the embryonic web are deflected into the conduits of the papermaking belt by the vaccum pressure while the papermaking belt and the embryonic web travel over the vaccum source. Following the deflection, the paper web is impressed with the paper side network of the belt, and dried to form the final product.

    • A papermakers fabric having a system of flat monofilament machine direction yarns (hereinafter MD yarns) which control the permeability of the fabric. The present weave provides for usage of high aspect ratio yarns as structural weave components. The system of MD yarns comprises upper and lower yarns which are vertically stacked. Preferably, the upper MD yarns define floats on the upper surface of the fabric and each upper MD yarn is paired in a vertically stacked orientation with a lower MD yarn. At least the upper MD yarns are flat monofilament yarns woven contiguous with each other to reduce the permeability of the fabric and to lock in the machine direction alignment of the stacking pairs of MD yarns. The stacked, contiguous woven machine direction system provides stability and permits the MD yarns to have a relatively high aspect ratio, cross-sectional width to height, of greater than 3:1. A seam for the fabric comprised of loops from selected flat MD yarns is provided to render the fabric endless during use in papermaking.
