摘要： A disk (1) is constituted of a substrate (11), an aluminum signal layer (12) in which pits (14) are made, and a protective plate (13). An information reproducing device reproduces information from the disk (1) by means of a reproducing circuit (5) by convergently emitting an electron beam (E) from an electron gun (40) and detecting the variation of the intensity of the reflection of the beam (E) with a detector (42). A recording medium (20) is constituted of a conductive layer (22), an insulating layer (23), and an island-like fixed electrode (24) formed on the layer (23) and electrically insulated from its periphery. The fixed electrode (24) has a memory function. To write information on the medium (20), electrons are implanted into the electrode (24) with an electron gun (40). To erase all the information at a time, a voltage is applied across the conductive layer (22). To read out information, the electrostatic effect between the fixed electrode (24) and its counter electrode is utilized. Therefore, the information recording capacity of the medium (20) is increased and the information reading accuracy from the medium (20) is improved.

摘要： A method of finely machining solid surface and, particularly, a novel method and apparatus for machining the surfaces of solid elements on an atomic scale in order to prepare very fine elements and for recording data at ultra-high density. A probe (1) having a sharp end is disposed being opposed to the surface of a sample (4) that is to be machined, a voltage is applied between the probe and the sample to form an electric field large enough to field-vaporize atoms (5) constituting the sample or to field-vaporize atoms (6) constituting the probe. Atoms constituting the sample are field-vaporized and are split off the sample surface or atoms constituting the probe are field-vaporized and are adhered onto the sample surface, thereby to finely machine the sample surface on an atomic scale. Furthermore, a voltage is applied like pulses at any desired position on the sample surface to generate field-vaporization between the probe and the sample while observing the sample surface on an atomic scale based on a surface observation method using a scanning tunnel microscope, in order to remove atoms one by one from the sample surface by field-vaporization.

摘要： A fire-resistant case for protecting electronic storage media includes a main body (10) and lid (12), each of which is assembled from a pair of subassemblies (14, 16 and 34, 36). The outer subassemblies (16, 36) of the lid and main body are made from an integral resin body having inner (26, 50), outer (28, 52), and intermediate (30, 54) shells for encasing a layer of water-bearing material (32, 56). The outer shells (28, 52) form the outer skin of the case, the inner shells (26, 50) form a moisture-resistant layer, and the intermediate shells (30, 54) form an outer seal between the main body and lid. The inner subassembly (14) of the main body is built up from an inner repository (18) of heat-conducting material, slabs of phase-changing material (20), and a foam insulation (22) that encases the inner repository and phase-changing material. The foam insulation (22) is formed as a self-skinning foam for forming a part of an inner seal (24) between the main body and lid. An inner subassembly (34) of the lid is constructed in a variety of ways consistent with the purposes of the other named layers of the case.

摘要： A disk file includes an expansion ring attached to the wall of the hub (26) and which is located between the lowermost disk (22) of the disk stack and the hub flange. A circular ridge (52) concentric with the hub is formed on the ring and engages the underside of the disk. The ring is adapted so that the thermal expansion of the ring is substantially equal to that of the aluminum disk at the position of contact between the two. A washer (51) interposed between ring and flange allows the ring to move freely relative to the flange. During thermal cycling, the ring and disk move at the same rate at the point of contact, the ring ensuring that the disks remain concentric with the hub throughout the range of disk file operating temperatures.
