    • An excitation circuit for a flux switching motor. The circuit includes a low-value film capacitor across the DC side of a bridge rectifier. A plurality electronic switches are arranged in an H-bridge configuration for switching current flow through an armature winding of the motor in accordance with a PWM control scheme and single-pulse control scheme controlled by a microcontroller. A start-up diode is placed across the field winding of the motor and is electronically switched out of the circuit after a startup phase of the motor has completed. The circuit implements armature energy recirculation through the field winding during startup to promote more uniform and quicker startup of the motor. The use of a film capacitor improves the power factor of the circuit, helps to eliminate the introduction of harmonics into the AC voltage source, and helps in mitigating EMI. Reverse commutation is used to bring the motor to a quick stop when it is powered off.

    • The invention relates to a method for operating an electronically commutated motor (10) which is provided with a current limiting device acting on a PWM control system (56). During operation, said control system emits PWM pulses (60) with a controllable pulse duty factor (pwm) and an essentially constant frequency. In the event of a pre-determined upper limiting value (Inom; Iw) of the motor current (Iactual) being exceeded, the pulse duty factor (pwm) is modified by means of the current limiting device in order to reduce the motor current (Iactual). In the event of the motor current (Iactual) exceeding a pre-determined upper limiting value (Inom; Iw) during the rotation of the motor (10), said limiting value (Inom; Iw) is increased (fig. 8: Iwmax) during a pre-determined time span (304) using a timer (260), and the available motor power is thus temporarily increased when a peak load occurs. When the rotor (24) is blocked, the limiting value (Inom) is not increased, but rather significantly reduced. The limiting value (Inom) is preferably increased according to the rotational speed of the motor (10), in order to utilize the better motor cooling system during high rotational speeds. The limiting value (Inom) is momentarily increased to a high value when the motor is started (10), in order to enable a reliable start.

The system comprises: an electric machine; a position sensor subsystem operatively connected to the electric machine configured to measure a position and transmit a position signal to a controller (32, 36). The controller (36) executes a method initializing position for the electric machine (32), the method comprising: establishing a sensor subsystem datum indicative of a measurement reference point for a sensor subsystem (14); obtaining a calibration value corresponding to a distance to a selected magnetic reference position for the electric machine (28), relative to the sensor subsystem datum; and measuring a position and calculating a position delta relative to an initial reference (26). The method also includes: estimating an offset from the sensor subsystem datum to an initial reference; determining an absolute position estimate of the electric machine relative to the magnetic reference position (34). The absolute position (34) estimate is responsive to the calibration value, the position delta, and the offset from the sensor subsystem datum to the initial reference.

    • A cooling module includes, for certain embodiments, a brushless DC fan and integral fan control circuitry which independently implements a self-contained start and run motor control loop and also includes a communications port to accept commands from a host processor and to provide status and other data in response to queries from the host processor. In one embodiment, a fan module interfaces with a two-wire serial bus, such as an I C bus or SMbus, and accepts commands and provides status and data in a serial digital format. A variety of commands such as on/off, and various speed control settings may be received from the host system, and the actual speed of the fan may be reporter back when queried by the host system. In some embodiments a temperature within or near the fan housing or of the air flow through the fan may be reported back when queried. The entire fan control circuit may preferably be incorporated within the fan housing, including a serial interface and power terminals for the fan, resulting in a compact four-wire interface for the fan module.

Since the windings (94) are wound with the rotor assembly (72) already enclosed, the windings (94) do not require large end coils to allow subsequent insertion of the rotor (72). The permanent magnet (74) is unmagnetized when the coils (94) are wound around the rotor assembly (72) thus the winding process is simplified by not coupling energy into the wire, which would influence the winder operation.
