    • Signal processing architectures for direct acquisition of spread spectrum signals using long codes. Techniques are described for achieving a high of parallelism, employing code matched filter banks and other hardware sharing. In one embodiment, upper and lower sidebands are treated as two independent signals with identical spreading codes. Cross-correlators, in preferred embodiments, are comprised of a one or more banks of CMFs for computing parallel short-time correlations (STCs) of received signal samples and replica code sequence samples, and a means for calculating the cross-correlation values utilizing discrete-time Fourier analysis of the computed STCs. One or more intermediate quantizers may optionally be disposed between the bank of code matched filters and the cross-correlation calculation means for reducing word-sizes of the STCs prior to Fourier analysis. The techniques described may be used with BOC modulated signals or with any signals having at least two distinct sidebands.

    • A system for detecting and identifying the identity of a base station or cell which transmits a scrambling code is provided. According to one aspect of the system, the system is used to perform scrambling code detection of eight (8) primary cells (each scrambling code's X-component being spaced sixteen (16) chips apart) in a group. According to another aspect of the system, a single scrambling code generator is used to generate a master scrambling code. The master scrambling code is then used to create individual scrambling codes which are used in correlation with received signals to detect in parallel which one of the eight (8) possible primary cells in the group transmitted the received signals. According to yet another aspect of the system, each of the correlators maintains a corresponding X-component segment of the master scrambling code. For every sixteen (16) chips, a new X-component segment of the master scrambling code is introduced into one of the correlators, a X-component segment of the master scrambling code is dropped from another correlator, and X-component segments of the master scrambling code are sequentially shifted or propagated through the remaining correlators; and concurrent correlations are performed by the correlators using their respective corresponding X-component segments of the master scrambling code and newly received signals.

    • Demodulator architectures for processing a received signal in a wireless communications system. The demodulator includes a number of correlators coupled to a combiner. Each correlator typically receives and despreads input samples (which are generated from the received signal) with a respective despreading sequence to provide despread samples. Each correlator then decovers the despread samples to provide decovered "half-symbols" and further demodulates the decovered half-symbols with pilot estimates to generate correlated symbols. The decovering is performed with a Walsh symbol having a length (T) that is half the lenght (2T) of a Walsh symbol used to cover the data symbols in the transmitted signal. The combiner selectively combines correlated symbols from the assigned correlators to provide demodualted symbols. One or more correlators can be assigned to process one or more instances of each transmiteed signal. The pilot estimates used within each assigned correlator to demodulate the decovered half-symbols are generated based on the signal instance being prcessed by that correlator.

    • A method of despreading a target spread spectrum signal containing pseudorandom noise (PRN) code sequences modulated by a data message is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of providing data message information relating to the timing of an epoch of at least one data bit; and performing a correlation of the target signal and a replica signal containing corresponding PRN code sequences using the data message information to minimise degradation of the correlation caused by variations in the PRN code sequences in the target signal attributable to modulation by the data message. The correlation may be timed so as to substantially avoid continuous correlation over an epoch of a data bit. Alternatively, the data message information may further comprise bit information wherein the correlation is modified as a function of the data message information. In particular, where data bit modulation of the PRN code sequences in the target signal is the same as or equivalent to exclusive-or modulation, the polarity of PRN code sequences in the replica signal may be selectively reversed.

    • Delays in a spread spectrum signal transmitted in a communications medium according to a spreading sequence may be determined by receiving a composite signal including the spread spectrum signal from the communications medium. The composite signal is correlated with the spreading sequence according to a first correlation length, to produce first time-offset correlations of the composite signal with the spreading sequence. Selected ones of the first time-offset correlations of the composite signal then are further correlated with the spreading sequence according to a second correlation length that is longer than the first correlation length, to produce second time-offset correlations of the composite signal with the spreading sequence. At least one of the second time-offset correlations may be selected. By providing variable length accumulation searchers, power and/or processing time can be saved by performing limited correlations for those delays that do not appear to be qualified candidates to be ultimately selected.
