    • A method for soft frame synchronization in a navigational receiver is provided. A distance between bits of a sync pattern received by the navigational receiver and a known sync pattern is computed. A probability of detection value for the received sync pattern based on the distance is assigned. A confidence level for the received sync pattern using the probability of detection value is computed. The confidence level is compared with a confidence threshold. If the confidence level is greater than or equal to the confidence threshold, the confidence level of the received sync pattern is updated to generate a credibility of the sync pattern. The credibility of the received sync pattern is compared with a predetermined credibility value and, if the credibility of the received sync pattern is greater than or equal to the predetermined credibility value, synchronization of the navigational receiver is performed using the received sync pattern.

    • A detect decision is made by non-coherently combining results from correlating a preamble (CAZAC) sequence with base/root sequences used in the cell and setting a detection threshold based on those combined results. Another threshold can be set based on coherently combining results from correlating the preamble sequence, in which case the detect decision is based on satisfying either one of the thresholds. Where the sequence repeats in the same preamble, the results that are combined are from correlating the first instance of the CAZAC sequence and from correlating the second instance of the CAZAC sequence. Where the sequence does not repeat, different segments of the CAZAC sequence, each less than the whole and not necessarily of the same length, are correlated for a partial correlation on each segment, then the segments are combined and used to set the detection threshold. Detection may be done in stages, adjusting the threshold after the first stage based on comparing the results of non-coherent and coherent combining.

    • A multiple step process is performed at a local wireless network to limit interference between the local wireless network and a remote wireless network. Initially, a set of code words is chosen for the local wireless network to encode data with that have good cross correlation properties. If these initial code words are not adequate to prevent interference, then the local wireless network will adjust its transmission parameters by either shifting the transmission phase of its signals or by changing the code words it uses. If altering the transmission parameters does not alleviate the interference problem, then the local wireless network attempts to locate the interfering remote network and merge with it. If the merger is not possible or is unsuccessful, then the interference limiting process fails.

    • A pseudonise code (PN) acquisition scheme employs all elements of a smart antenna array (102) and an adaptive threshold. The basic structure is the combination of a PN correlation searcher (105), an adaptive beamformer (107) and an adaptive threshold setting circuit (108). During each observation interval, the adaptive beamformer adaptively updates the weight vector for the smart antenna elements using the accumulated received signal despread with a trial PN code phase error. A spatially correlated signal is then formed by weighting an accumulated value of the signal received by each antenna in the array over the observation period with the corresponding final weight of smart antenna weight vector as calculated by the adaptive beamformer, and finally compared to the adaptive threshold to determine whether PN code acquisition has occurred.
