(b) Cell ID Sequence (CIS): A separate sequence to determine the cell ID, after the frame timing and frequency offset is established. (c) Frame Index Indication Sequence (FIIS):In a final step the FIIS to determine the frame number.

    • An access point is identified based on pilot signal information that appears on different frequencies. Here, a combination of one or more pilot PN spreading codes or one or more PN offsets on different frequencies are used to uniquely identify an access point. For example, upon receipt of a pilot measurement report, a network entity may uniquely identify an access point that transmitted the pilot signals based on at least one pilot PN spreading code or at least one PN offset and a plurality of frequencies identified by the report. Also, to facilitate acquiring this information, a network entity may request an access terminal to conduct an inter-frequency search for pilot signals. Also, an access terminal may maintain pilot information corresponding to access points in a network and use this information to autonomously conduct inter-frequency searches for pilot signals.

    • A circuit and algorithm are disclosed for a step2 search of a three step search of synchronization channels in a W-CDMA system. A mobile terminal of the CDMA system includes an RF downconverter for receiving I and Q signals. A searcher, responsive to the I and Q signals, includes a first correlator for correlating the I and Q signals with a primary synchronization code on a primary synchronization channel, and a second correlator for correlating I and Q signals with a secondary synchronization code on a secondary synchronization channel. The correlated I and Q signals are added for each of the secondary synchronization codes. An energy calculator and a maximum energy detector use the correlated I and Q signals of both the primary and secondary synchronization channels to detect the most likely scrambling code group of secondary synchronization codes.

    • To support cell search, multiple (e.g., two) synchronization transmissions are sent in a frame with non-uniform spacing. Information is conveyed via the non-equal distances between consecutive synchronization transmissions. Multiple levels of non-uniform spacing may be used to convey different types of information. In one design, the multiple synchronization transmissions are sent in different subframes of a frame, and each synchronization transmission is sent in one of multiple symbol periods in a respective subframe. The synchronization transmissions may be sent in non-evenly spaced subframes to convey frame boundary. One synchronization transmission may be sent in one of multiple possible symbol periods depending on the information, e.g., a particular group of cell IDs, being conveyed. The distances between synchronization transmissions may also be used to convey cyclic prefix length. A secondary synchronization transmission carrying a cell ID may be sent at a predetermined offset from one of the multiple synchronization transmissions.
