    • A photocatalytic element comprising a titanium oxide film disposed on a major surface of a transparent substrate and having a photocatalytic function and a physical thickness of 50 to 500 nm; and a primary film interposed between the transparent substrate and the titanium oxide film, composed of two layers, and having a total physical thickness of 40 to 200 nm. The layer adjoining the transparent substrate, of the primary film, has at least a function of blocking the gas and impurities which are to be discharged or eluded at least from the transparent substrate. The layer adjoining the titanium oxide, of the primary film, has a larger refractive index than that of the layer adjoining the transparent substrate. The primary film suppresses the dependence of the color tone on the thickness of the titanium oxide film to a small value, so that the visible light reflected light color tone and the visible light transmitted light color tone, when observed at least in one direction, of one primary surface of the transparent substrate, are within such ranges where the chromaticness indices a* and b* of the L*a*b* color specification system are within +/- 5.

    • A process for the production of a photocatalytically active self-cleaning coated substrate, especially a glass substrate, which comprises depositing a titanium oxide coating on the surface of the substrate by contacting it with a fluid mixture containing a source of titanium and a source of oxygen, the substrate being at a temperature of at least 600 DEG C. The coated surface has good durability, a high photocatalytic activity and a low visible light reflection. Most preferably the deposition temperature is in the range 645 DEG C to 720 DEG C which provides especially good durability. The fluid mixture preferably contains titanium chloride and an ester, especially ethyl acetate. Also disclosed is a self cleaning coated substrate, especially a glass substrate, having high photocatalytic activity and low visible light reflection and a durable self-cleaning coated glass.

    • The invention relates to a sol-gel method for producing titanium oxide layers. Said method comprises the following steps: (i) producing a soluble, titanium-containing powder by (a) reacting a titanium alcoholate of general formula Ti(OR)4, in which the radicals R are the same or different and represent straight-chain, branched or cyclic alkyl or alkenyl radicals with 1 to 10 carbon atoms, which optionally have one or several carbonyl and/or ester and/or carboxylic functions, with one or several polar compounds which have complexing, chelating properties, (b) heating the solution, (c) mixing the solution with water, optionally in the presence of a catalyst, (d) reducing the solution until a powder is obtained, (ii) dissolving the powder, whereby a sol is formed, (iii) coating a substrate with said sol, and (iv) tempering the coated substrate.
