The lifting device provides an aesthetically appealing system with the seat substantially covering the lifting device, thus obscuring its view. The guiding assembly (26'') guides the seat from a lowered position to a raised position to facilitate ingress and egress to a bather. A composite bath embodiment and a retrofit embodiment, each with either straight up or laterally offset lifting, are disclosed. All the embodiments can use a closed self-pressurized system.

The outer support legs extend downwards to terminate in casters which rest on the bathroom floor and preferably have a brake means. A person may be readily moved from outside the tub into the interior for showering by advancement of the support bars and seat along the rails, and shifting the outer support legs towards the outside wall of the bathtub in an "accordion-like" manner.

The winch (391) can be arranged to synchronously raise and lower a pair of horizontally spaced couplings by which a carrier (480) for a person can be connected to the winch (391). The beam (392) can be of variable length. The frame (393) can include a pair of beam-supporting legs (406, 407), one of which can be movable along and removable from the beam as extended from a minimum length state in which the frame (393) can be moved through a doorway. The frame (393) can be of fixed width, with the beam extendible from a side of the frame in conjunction with ground-engaging stabilizers (446, 446') which are extendible from the frame to support the frame from overturning when a person is supported outside the frame from the extended beam (413). A carrier (480) for a person can be a fabric construction which has stiffened back (483) and seat portions, and a lift point at each side of the carrier (480). Another form of carrier can also serve as a portion of a bed.

The arrangement is such that, with the seat unit (15) disconnected from the movable inner part (7), the inner part can be retracted to an unobtrusive position, substantially at the level of the rim (3), where the aperture (8) can then be closed by a cap (20), so as to cover the retracted inner part (7). Also disclosed is a hydraulic pressure intensifier (110) for operating a hydraulic actuator (101), such as the telescopic column (5) of the bath (1) as well as a pneumatic plug (200) and socket connector (210) which may be used in a pneumatic control system adapted to operate a bath hoist (4) comprising a movable seat unit (15).
