    • A grinding or polishing machine comprises a rigid platform on which a workhead spindle and a grinding wheel spindle are located. The grinding wheel spindle is mounted on a sub-assembly which is attached to the platform by means of flexures which permit limited movement of the sub-assembly in a direction generally parallel to the direction in which the wheel has to advance to achieve grinding or polishing of a workpiece mounted on the workhead spindle. The flexures generally inhibit movement of the sub-assembly in all other directions. Two grinding wheels are mounted on the platform, one on each of two sub-assemblies, and each sub-assembly is attached to the platform by flexures as aforesaid. The flexure mounting points are located generally centrally of the machine and are located on either side of and close to the machine centre line. In a grinding or polishing machine having workpiece spindle means, tool spindle means mounted on sub-assemblies which permit limited relative movement in one direction to effect tool and workpiece engagement cam drive means is provided whereby each sub-assembly is movable to advance or retract each tool spindle towards and away from the workhead spindle.

    • In a machine tool a reference straight-edge is mounted on the worktable of the machine tool and the position of the worktable and therefore the workpiece along the x-axis of the machine is determined by reference to the straight edge; a linear scale is mounted to move with the tool and a reading head associated therewith provides a measure of the position of the tool along the x-axis of the machine, and a linear scale is mounted to move with the worktable and a reading head associated therewith provides a measure of the position of the worktable and therefore the workpiece along the z-axis of the machine; wherein the linear scale mounted to the tool and the reference straight edge mounted to the worktable and the reading heads and sensors associated therewith are all mounted in the same plane, and the machine is mounted so that the said plane is horizontal. The linear tool scale is aligned with the tool axis which intersects the point of application of the tool to the workpiece. The reference straight edge sensor is also located on the same axis so as to be on the same straight line as the linear tool scale and the point of application of the tool to the workpiece. The reading head for the linear scale mounted to the worktable is also located in the same vertical plane containing the said tool axis. Where the tool is a grinding wheel, the wheel is mounted with its axis of rotation at the same height as the reference straight edge and the linear scale associated with the wheel.

    • A method is described for grinding a composite workpiece (18) to form a component having concentric (31) and eccentric cylindrical regions (30). The method comprises mounting the workpiece (18) in a computer controlled grinding machine (10) having a grinding wheel (12) the advance and withdrawal of which is controllable by a programme entered into the controlling computer (32), loading a wheelfeed controlling programme into the computer, relatively positioning the grinding wheel and the workpiece to align the wheel with a first selected region of the workpiece, advancing the grinding wheel towards the selected region so as to grind the surface thereof, controlling the wheelfeed so as to maintain grinding contact between the grinding wheel and the workpiece so as either to grind a concentric cylindrical region thereon or an eccentric (offset) cylindrical region thereon as required, information about each selected region of the workpiece being stored in the computer and addressed as appropriate so that the wheelfeed can be cotrolled appropriately depending on whether a selected workpiece region is to be ground as a concentric or an eccentric (offset) cylindrical region. The method allows a workpiece having both concentric and eccentric (offset) cylindrical regions thereon to be ground using a single grinding machine under computer control without demounting the workpiece from the machine. The method also envisages introducing small advance and retract movements in the wheelfeed whilst the grinding wheel is engaged in grinding a concentric cylindrical workpiece region so as to introduce into the ground region an eccentricity which is equal and opposite to any eccentricity which grinding process forces introduce into the ground region, so that the two eccentricities cancel out. A computer controlled grinding machine is described as are programmes for controlling the machine.

    • A machine tool has a carriage (28), has a workpiece carriage (28) for carrying a workpiece (32) from which material is removed by a tool (54) carried by a tool carriage (48). A two-axis scale (86, 88) is attached to one of the carriages, and cooperates with a reading head (96, 98) attached to the other carriage. The output from the reading head is processed by signalling processing means to provide an indication of the position and/or movement of the carriages relative to each other and for generating positional data about one or both of the carriages to assist in controlling their movement in order to perform a machine operation. By directly measuring the relative positions of the two carriages, problems arising from, for example, distortions of the machine frame on which the carriages are mounted are at least mitigated. A preferred embodiment of the machine incorporates a second reading head attached to one carriage and incorporating the scale on another carriage so that the outputs from the two reading heads can be used to determine whether there has been any relative angular displacement of the paths followed by the carriages. There is also provided a method of determining the linear movement of one of the carriages relative to the other, and the machining process achieved using the machine tool.

    • A method of accoupling a driven member (50) from a driving member (46) used to rotate the driven member is disclosed. The method comprises the step of connecting the driving member to the driven member via a connecting means (38) which is torsionally rigid in a plane generally perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the driven member (50), but is readily deformable in other planes to accommodate misalignment. A drive decoupling means for achieving the method is also provided, wherein the connecting means comprises a laminated device attached to the driving member via at least one off axis connection and to the driven member by at least one other off axis connection, the connections being circularly spaced one from the other. Two such decoupling means may be connected in series to compensate for both offset and misalignment. The method and decoupling means are of particular use in machine tools, such as lathes and grinding machines for transmitting drive to workpieces therein.

    • A machine tool comprising: a machine frame; a work carrying assembly for carrying a workpiece, carried by said machine frame for reciprocal movement along a work axis; and a cover assembly carried by said machine frame and including cover portions disposed to cover selected areas of said machine frame proximate said work axis. The cover assembly is not connected to the work carrying assembly but is operable to effect movement of said cover portions commensurate with movement of said work carrying assembly. The work carrying assembly includes a work carriage and said machine frame mounts a slideway proximate said axis and extending in the same direction as the work axis. The work carriage extends in the direction of said work axis but is of lesser extent than said slideway such that portions of said slideway to either one, the other or both extremities of said carriage assembly may be exposed upon said reciprocal movement of said work carrying assembly work carriage. The cover portions cover the slideways that may so be exposed. A first cover portion is disposed to cover the slideway to one side of the work carriage and a second cover portion is disposed to cover the slideway to the other side of the work carriage. Each cover portion includes a plurality of telescoping, slidably interrelated covers which are moved with respect to each other to cover more less of said slideways as such become exposed or become covered by the work carriage.

    • The time to grind a workpiece can be reduced by selecting a grinding wheel whose width is not substantially greater than wheel strength considerations require, and which may therefore be less than the axial length of the region to be ground providing a work rest or work steady to increase the workpiece stiffness if required, and performing a succession of plunge grinding steps so as to grind the whole of the said axial region. Typically the grinding wheel is an electroplated CBN wheel, and the width of the grinding wheel selected is the narrowest permissible given the desired feed rate and motive power available. A grinding machine is disclosed comprising a wheelhead having mounted thereon a grinding wheel whose width is not substantially greater than that dictated by structural and strength requirements, programmable indexing means to enable the relative positions of the wheelhead and workpiece to be adjusted in a sequence of steps to achieve a sequence of plunge grinds, which may or may not overlap, to enable a region of the workpiece to be ground, the axial extent of which is greater than the width of the wheel, and wheel feed means and control means by which the feed rate is controlled, whereby the wheel feed rate is similarly programmable to enable a feed rate to be achieved which is limited only by the peak and RMS power capabilities of the wheel spindle drive motor, so that the rate of material removal is as high as is compatible with the power capabilities of the machine during each plunge, thereby optimising the total cycle time for grinding.
