    • A method for manufacturing a quartz oscillator in which a quartz piece is ground as small, thin, and accurate as possible as to obtain a quartz oscillator, a quartz resonator or an optical lens for transmission and reception of a high frequency wave. An object (4) to be ground is bonded to a cylindrical, square or similar-shaped magnet plate (51) with adhesive (14) such as colophonium, resin of the mixture of colophonium and wax. The magnet plate (51) with the object (4) is directly attached to a chuck (3) made of magnetic material such as iron with adhesive (14) or another mean by using the magnetic force of the magnet plate (51), and the object (4) is ground to fabricate a quartz oscillator. An apparatus for manufacturing a quartz oscillator, comprises a magnet plate consisting of a permanent magnet or an electromagnet, a holder which holds at its tip a spherical grindstone which has a grindstone surface of diamond, etc. on its surface for grinding an object bonded to the magnet plate, and a driver which turns the holder around the axis passing the center of the spherical grindstone.

    • The time to grind a workpiece can be reduced by selecting a grinding wheel whose width is not substantially greater than wheel strength considerations require, and which may therefore be less than the axial length of the region to be ground providing a work rest or work steady to increase the workpiece stiffness if required, and performing a succession of plunge grinding steps so as to grind the whole of the said axial region. Typically the grinding wheel is an electroplated CBN wheel, and the width of the grinding wheel selected is the narrowest permissible given the desired feed rate and motive power available. A grinding machine is disclosed comprising a wheelhead having mounted thereon a grinding wheel whose width is not substantially greater than that dictated by structural and strength requirements, programmable indexing means to enable the relative positions of the wheelhead and workpiece to be adjusted in a sequence of steps to achieve a sequence of plunge grinds, which may or may not overlap, to enable a region of the workpiece to be ground, the axial extent of which is greater than the width of the wheel, and wheel feed means and control means by which the feed rate is controlled, whereby the wheel feed rate is similarly programmable to enable a feed rate to be achieved which is limited only by the peak and RMS power capabilities of the wheel spindle drive motor, so that the rate of material removal is as high as is compatible with the power capabilities of the machine during each plunge, thereby optimising the total cycle time for grinding.

    • A disposable sanding device is fabricated as a continuous rope-like article which is adapted for selective segmentation and application as a plurality of serially arranged disposable hand sanding devices or ropes. Each hand sanding device is formed as a generally elongated rod shaped base portion formed of lightweight material such as closed cell foam having a relatively constant cross-section along its line of elongation. An abrasive surface is permanently applied to the external surface of the base portion via an intermediate adhesive layer. As constructed, the sanding device is operable to conform to curvilinear contours of a work piece to be sanded upon application of user induced loading against the work piece. A dispenser holds a rolled length of sanding rope and includes a cutter feature for severing pieces of sanding rope from the coil as required as well as a retainer for the free end of the coil. A tensioning hand tool holds a severed length of sanding rope for precise applications. Interconnection means is provided to concentrically position and affix opposed ends of a base portion segment.
