    • A magnetic tape transport apparatus wherein at least one capstan simultaneously drives the take-up and supply reels, and wherein tape tension is generated by a braking device allotted to each tape reel, each braking device consisting of an assembly of levers (A, B, C, and D, E, Z) and a braking cable which is wound around the axle supporting the tape reel, and by means of which the braking forces are so adjusted that it is always the axle of the supply reel which is braked, while the axle of the take-up reel runs relatively freely. In a practical embodiment, the lever assembly comprises at least three hingedly connected levers (A, B, C and D, E, Z), viz. two lateral levers and an interconnecting lever, it being possible to obtain different lever arrangements by varying the locations of the movable pivot points (G) and the fixed fulcrum points (F) FIGS. 1 to 3). The tape transport with such braking devices is suitable for all types of magnetic tape recorder, such as audio, video and data recording apparatus, and can be used with particular advantage in compact portable recorders.

    • A length of magnetic tape extending between a pair of reels within a cartridge is driven bidirectionally at high speeds with substantially constant tension by a transport having a pair of capstans engaging and movable to accommodate the constantly changing tape packs on the reels. Constant tape tension is achieved by a driving arrangement utilizing pairs of pulleys of slightly different diameter coupled via overriding unidirectional clutches to shafts which mount the capstans and are driven from a common motor by belts coupled to the different pairs of pulleys. The difference in pulley diameter causes the capstan engaging the takeup reel to be driven slightly faster than the capstan engaging the supply reel so as to maintain the constant tape tension. The tape cartridge has a single front door which is automatically raised upon insertion of the cartridge into the transport by opposite bosses on the transport which engage camming levers at the opposite ends of the front door. The cartridge also includes spring-loaded arrangements for blocking out rotation of the reels except when the cartridge is inserted in the transport, and dust covers which are movable out of the way by movement of the capstan shafts into slots in the cartridge. A camming arrangement resiliently engages the bottom of the cartridge to force the installed cartridge into engagement with three different height referencing elements. A separate locking arrangement engages an aperture in the bottom of the cartridge to lock the installed cartridge in a desired horizontal position until the camming arrangement releases the cartridge.

    • An improved method and apparatus for generating constant tape or web tension in a transport system of the type wherein the supply and take-up reels are simultaneously driven by surface engagement with a capstan. Uniform tension is maintained throughout the entire tape pack by balancing the supply reel peripheral velocity rate of change occurring during the transport operation to the greater, but correspondingly sloped, take-up reel peripheral velocity rate of change. This balancing of the peripheral velocity of the supply and take-up reels is achieved through utilization of a constant braking system that combines the effects of torque and bias forces acting on the supply reel so as to produce constant tape tension in the take-up reel.

    • An improved tape transport apparatus of the type in which the supply and take-up reels are simultaneously driven by surface engagement of a capstan with the outermost layer of tape on each reel. The uniform tape tension required in a system of this type is produced and maintained by the combination of a braking force on the reel acting as the supply reel and of different biasing forces which cause different deformation of the capstan at the points of surface engagement of the supply and take-up reels with the capstan. A substantially constant tension profile is obtained by balancing the tension contributed by the two types of forces. A braking/biasing unit on each of the reel shafts provides both an undirectional braking force to resist the rotation of the shaft acting as the supply shaft and the biasing forces required to produce the unequal deformation.
