    • An excavatory machine for use in coal and other mining, has a pair of rotary cutters for simultaneous presentation to the work. The cutters are mounted on the ends of a medially fulcrumed lever which can be swung about its fulcrum so to increase the work ambit of the combined cutters. The fulcrum has means for raising and lowering it and holding it at selected elevation so to suit the height of the seam being worked. The cutter assembly is mounted on a saddle which is laterally slidable and drivable from side-to-side of a base slidable along the excavation floor in the direction the work is required to follow. This base is furnished with means enabling it to be nudged along in the said direction so to force the cutters into the work.The base is provided with conveyor means to take away excavated matter and also with mechanism by which the path followed by the base may be up-or down-trended.

    • A longwall mining machine and method for its use, the machine traveling over a face conveyor having a first toothed rack extending therealong. A gantry-like frame is movable along the face conveyor and has upstanding supports at its opposite ends which carry an upper track and a second toothed rack. A first mining machine frame is carried on the face conveyor and has drive pinion means engageable with the first toothed rack. A second mining machine frame is carried on the upper track of the gantry-like frame and has drive pinion means engageable with the second toothed rack. The first and second mining machine frames each having a shearer drum mounted thereon for cutting and removing a mineral seam. Means are provided for selectively securing the first and second mining machine frames to the gantry-like frame, the arrangement being such that when the first and second machines are secured to the gantry-like frame, the entire frame with both mining machine frames will traverse the face conveyor upon rotation of the drive pinion means on the first mining machine. At the end of a face area being mined, the lower mining machine frame is moved to a position where it is directly beneath the upper mining machine frame.

    • A long wall mining machine includes a drum cutter-loader and face conveyor wherein the drum cutter-loader is overhung and is supported by a support arm adjacent to the mine face. Nozzles direct high pressure liquid jets against the forward edge of the support arm to cut away the mining face and permit the face side support arm to advance as the mining machine advances. In one embodiment the nozzles are provided along an inclined cutting edge at the forward end of the support arm. Such nozzles may be fixed or oscillating. In an alternative embodiment the nozzles are provided in the cylindrical edge zone of the shearer drum and direct the high pressure fluid jets against the cutter edge at the forward end of the support arm.

    • A mining installation includes a mine roof support the base of which has a forward part on which is located an elevated track on which a mining machine can be supported for reciprocal movement. A conveyor is disposed beneath the cantilever track for the receipt of mined mineral, but does not bear any of the weight of the machine. The support element has utility supply conduits for use at any location along a mineral face. The installation can be used in thick seams working on the retreat principle and for seams of the order of 8 m can be provided with a rear section also having an elevated support track for supporting a machine capable of taking a substantial roof cut in the wake of the forward section.

    • The invention is particularly adapted for use with a longwall mining machine of the type having a rack extending along a track for the mining machine, a gear wheel on the machine engageable with the rack for moving the machine along a track, at least two shearer drums carried by the machine, at least one driving motor on the machine, and gear train means connecting the driving motor to the shearer drums to rotate the same. Two inductive clutches having a common armature are connected through reduction gearing to the aforesaid driving gear wheel; while separate rotors connect the respective clutches to the gear train such that one rotor will rotate in a direction opposite to the other. A magnetically-actuated, spring-biased friction brake is disposed between the two inductive clutches for braking the clutches when the machine is at rest. The invention provides a self-contained driving unit for both the shearer drums and the driving gear wheel without materially increasing the length of the machine in order that it can be used in thin mineral seams.
