In one embodiment, a vehicle includes a side support extending in a vehicle longitudinal direction, a bumper assembly coupled to the side support and extending in a vehicle lateral direction that is transverse to the vehicle longitudinal direction, and a repositionable joint assembly extending between and pivotally coupled to the side support and the bumper assembly, the repositionable joint assembly including an outboard linking member pivotally coupled to the bumper assembly at a bumper securement location, an inboard linking member pivotally coupled to the side support at a side support securement location, and a fulcrum portion, where the outboard linking member is pivotally coupled to the inboard linking member at the fulcrum portion.

    • A reusable trailer mounted attenuator with a collapsible scissor frame assembly supported by front, intermediate and rear vertical frames. A self-adjusting shock absorber with staged metering is attached to the scissor frame assembly and controls its collapse under impact in a manner that deceleration of an impacting vehicle does not exceed permitted rates irrespective of the weight and speed of the impacting vehicle within the design range. Guides are provided to permit the scissor frame assembly to collapse without twisting and a replaceable strike plate with vertical fins concealed with a cover plate is attached to the rear vertical frame.

    • A deflectable vehicle bumper has a central frame member attachable to a front of a vehicle, and a pair of laterally extending wing members for protruding beyond the side of the vehicle, each wing member being substantially coplanar with the central frame member and attached thereto. Each wing member comprises a rigid plate having an inner end portion overlapping and detachably secured to the central frame member, and each plate has a vertical line of weakness constituting a fracture line outside the inner end portion, the fracture line ensuring that the plate fractures when a predetermined rearward force is applied thereto. A strip of resilient material is sandwiched between the overlapping plate and central frame member, the strip of resilient material being attached to the plate on each side of the fracture line. The wing members are retained substantially in a laterally extended position during minor impacts, and the resilient sheet restores the wing members to the laterally extended position after fracture of the plate has occurred.
