    • A truck mounted attenuator (TMA) is constructed to minimize length during use in a horizontal position and height in a vertical transport position, as well as to minimize wind resistance and buffeting at highway speeds. A modular construction is employed, so that only damaged portions of the TMA can be removed and replaced in the field after a vehicle impact. The TMA comprises a plurality of outwardly curved tubular structural members which are designed to buckle upon application to the TMA of forces resulting from vehicular impact. The rigid tubes buckle at a high initial force, then proceed to crush at a lower force once the sides have buckled outwardly sufficiently to protect vehicle occupants during the critical first two feet of travel after impact. This design also provides increased protection for errant vehicles which impact the TMA device from an angle (i.e. “coffin corner” impact).

    • An automotive vehicle with a vehicle body surrounding a storage area and a storage surface has a bumper with a concealable step side and a fascia side. The bumper is mounted to the vehicle for movement between a fascia position and a step position. In the fascia position, the fascia side is substantially vertical and rearwardly facing, and the step side is substantially concealed from view with respect to the vehicle body. In the step position, the step side is presented substantially horizontal and vertically below the storage area surface to permit step access to the storage surface. The bumper is releasably latched to the vehicle when in the fascia position.

    • A folding safety bumper has a body portion which spans the respective front portion of the vehicle approximately between the front tires, and an end extension pivotally mounted on each respective end of the body portion. The end members are mounted in telescoping arrangement such that the front surface of the extension overlaps and extends in behind the rear surface of the body portion. The extension is biased into engagement with the rear surface of the body portion in a first normal position sufficient to withstand normal bumps and mishaps, by means of a cooperating bracket and brace rod. The brace rod, which is normally secured between the bracket and pivoting end extension, disengages under a forceful impact so that the end extension becomes free swinging.
