    • A process for measuring the lamina size distribution comprises the steps of uniformly spreading sampled laminae over a conveyor and transporting the same; image-forming the conveyed lamina at a detection region having a given area by using a television camera each time when the lamina moves by a length corresponding to that of the detection region; storing in a memory binary video data which are converted from the video signal obtained by the image-forming; processing the stored video data to encircle continuous ones of the binary data which correspond to the lamina with a rectangular frame; counting the number of continuous ones of the binary data; converting the continuous ones of the binary data in the frame into the other ones binary data after counting; successively carrying out the same processing of different continuous ones of binary data to calculate the size of respective laminae; and measuring the distribution of the lamina size upon the basis of the calculation results.

    • In the production of wrappers or binders of different sizes from tobacco leaves, these leaves are at first divided into strip pieces that are transferred to a conveyor section and by means of a scanner are scanned to ascertain usable areas with preference from the largest to the smallest size. The strip pieces cut out of the same halves of tobacco leaves (right and left sides) are advanced on a further conveyor section consisting of separate, parallel belts, from which strip pieces of equally large, usable areas are collected in the same bobbin, in which they are oriented parallel to the axis of the bobbin and with their usable areas aligned in the longitudinal direction of the bobbin web. The cutting of nondefective final wrappers or binders is subsequently carried out in a separate operation and without further sorting. This provides for obtaining an optimum output from the tobacco leaves by using an apparatus of non-complicated design.

    • A carrier film composed of an ultra high molecular weight high density polyethylene is disclosed herein. The carrier film has a pair of opposed surfaces and a pair of opposed edges. The carrier film is perforated with a plurality of circular apertures. One of the opposed surfaces of the carrier film is roughened to carry a plurality of tobacco leaves to a wrapping machine. Tobacco leaves are held on the carrier strip by a vacuum and wound and stored on a spool. After a selected aging period the carrier strip is unwound from the spool and the tobacco leaves and carrier strip are sprayed with an adhesive. The carrier strip then releases the tobacco leaves adjacent a wrapping machine and is washed, dried and cooled.

    • A method for the continuous manufacture of cigarillos and other smoking articles comprising a rod of smokable material and a wrapper of tobacco leaf material circumscribing the rod comprises: conveying an elongate web of tobacco leaf material along a pre-determined path; repeatedly severing the elongate web to form a succession of discrete wrappers; contacting each of the succession of discrete wrappers with a respective one of a succession of rods of smokable material; and convoluting the discrete wrappers around the rods of smokable material to form smoking articles. The method may further comprise cutting a plurality of polygonal tobacco leaf portions from at least one tobacco leaf; and tessellating the plurality of polygonal tobacco leaf portions to form the elongate web.
