    • An amplifier provides two or more selectively enabled amplifier segments allowing a source signal to be amplified with a selectable output power. A bias circuit responsive to a bias control signal enables selectable combinations of one or more amplifier segments, thus allowing selection of a desired output power. Selecting a desired output signal power via the bias control signal corresponds to selecting an overall amplifier quiescent current that decreases with decreasing output signal power. Thus, the amplifier permits a controlling system, such as a mobile terminal (e.g., cellular telephone) to amplify a transmit signal with a selectable transmit signal output power and corresponding level of amplifier quiescent power consumption. Preferably, each segment comprises one or more transistor amplification stages which, when enabled by the bias circuit, are biased to permit maximum power linear amplification for the transmit signal.

    • A system and method for controlling transmitted output power of outdoor antenna units coupled to hand held wireless devices. When the antenna unit is operating with wireless network technology it may also be referred to as an outdoor unit. Transmit power level of an information signal is controlled in the outdoor unit by obtaining a control voltage from the hand held unit. The control voltage is used by the outdoor unit, to adjust the power level of the transmitted information signal. The transmit power level is adjusted by the outdoor unit performing the following steps: (1) detecting the transmit power level of the antenna unit, (2) determining whether the transmit power level is equal to a control voltage, and (3) adjusting the transmit power level based on the control voltage if the transmit power level is not equal to the control voltage. The adjustment of the transmit power level is accomplished by a closed loop circuit that maintains a constant loop gain.

    • An RF device including a control loop for maximizing output power for each of several data rates or constellation types. The RF device includes a power detector, a power amplifier and a MAC that includes input and output adjust circuits. A power level value is generated from measured output power. The MAC compares an adjusted power level value with a set point value and generates an error value. The MAC adjusts a power control value based on the error value for controlling the gain of the power amplifier. The MAC uses a data rate signal indicative of a selected constellation type or data rate. The input adjust circuit stores one or more input adjustment values selected by the data select signal for adjusting the power level value. The output adjust circuit stores one or more output adjustment values selected by the data select signal for adjusting the power control value.

    • A portable telephone set controls the amplification factor of an amplifier to control the transmission power of the portable telephone set based on a control signal transmitted from the base station. If the control signal transmitted from the base station controls the transmission power so as to be equal to or smaller than a predetermined level, then a first switching means sets the amplifier to an ON-state. If the control signal transmitted from the base station controls the transmission power so as to be greater than the predetermined level, then the first switching means sets the amplifier to an OFF-state. While the amplifier is being set to the OFF-state by the first switching means, if the amplifier is set to the ON-state by a second switching means only when the user of the portable telephone set communicates via the portable telephone set, then the amplifier is in the ON-state only during the communication if the transmission power is controlled so as to exceed the predetermined level.
