    • An apparatus and method are disclosed for suppressing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) of the output light from a laser such as a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) semiconductor laser using a tuner which responds to a dither signal to continuously tune the semiconductor laser to reduce stimulated Brillouin scattering therefrom. The tuner responds to a continuously applied sinusoidal current as the dither signal to tune the semiconductor laser by controlling the lasing wavelength thereof. The tuner includes an input region for receiving the dither signal. In a first embodiment, the tuner includes a resistor thermally connected to a passive waveguide of the semiconductor laser, with the resistor responding to the dither signal for continuously heating the passive waveguide to control the tuning of the semiconductor laser. In a second embodiment, the tuner responds to the dither signal to continuously bias the passive waveguide of the semiconductor laser to control the tuning of the semiconductor laser. The tuner continuously injects a biasing current into the passive waveguide of the semiconductor laser to continuously bias the passive waveguide.

    • An apparatus for and a method of controlling a laser oscillator for use as a laser source in a machining operation or the like is disclosed. In particular, the present invention compensates for a deviation of an actual input/output characteristic of a laser oscillator from a normal (expected) input/output characteristic due to, for example, aging and the like. The present invention approximates the actual input/output characteristic and stores the characteristic as a pattern in a storage device. In response to a detection of the actual laser output and an external intensity command signal, the present invention refers to the input/output characteristic pattern thus approximated and generates an input intensity command signal for controlling the laser oscillator to accurately produce the desired laser beam intensity irrespective of the deviation between the actual input/output characteristic and the normal characteristic.

    • A laser diode has its frequency locked to the frequency of an absorption line of rubidium (water and oxides of nitrogen are also disclosed). The level of absorption, and hence the frequency relationship of the laser light with respect to the absorption line is detected by a photodetector. The absolute frequency of the laser light is guaranteed by initially adjusting the temperature of the diode until the frequency of the light is brought into coincidence with a first absorption line, subsequently maintaining the temperature at a constant level, and adjusting the drive current of the diode until the frequency of laser light achieves coincidence with an adjacent transition line. This ensures that the diode frequency is locked to the same absorption line each occasion the diode is switched on. Additionally, the change in drive current between coincidence with the two adjacent absorption lines is monitored as a further check that the correct transition line has been selected. An error signal for a current servo, which drives the diode, is generated from the photodetector output. An oscillating magnetic field, causing cyclic Zeeman splitting of the absorption lines, and hence cyclic modulation of their frequency, causes a corresponding modulation in the photodetector output. Successive half cycles of the photodetector output are integrated and subtracted from each other in order to generate the error signal; the sign of the error signal thus being indicative of the direction of frequency drift in the laser light.
