    • A monitoring system using a unique remotely piloted drone with dual counter rotating propellers and carrying electric field sensing, thermal infra-red imaging, video imaging, acoustic and corona discharge sensing equipment. The compact remotely piloted drone flies along a power corridor and is maintained at a fixed distance from an outer phase conductor using on board electric field detection circuitry, video/infra-red imagery and an RF/laser altimeter.The counter rotating, twin-turbo driven configuration for the propellers mounted on coaxial vertical shafts provides a highly stable platform, unlike conventional manned helicopters presently used for routine right-of-way patrols. Dual, counter-rotating saucer-shaped auxiliary propellers provide a degree of stability far superior to a conventional helicopter, particularly in gusty winds. On board sensors and video cameras would permit electric utilities an economic approach to right-of-way monitoring, inspection of frayed conductors or deteriorated splices through infra-red sensing, detection of cracked insulators through acoustic/corona sensors, monitoring of critical, thermally limiting spans and other monitoring functions.

    • A threshold detection circuit for improving the output of a two-wire transmitter is disclosed. The transmitter comprises a sensing means which has a sensor responsive to a parameter to be sensed by the transmitter and an excitation means which provides an excitation output to excite the sensor. A threshold detection circuit is coupled to the sensor output and provides a detector output representative of an undesired change in excitation output which can produce a sensor output not substantially representative of the sensed parameter. An output means is coupled to the sensor output and detector output and provides the transmitter output as a function of the sensor output and detector output. A distinctive transmitter output representative of an undesired change in excitation output thus detected is provided, thereby improving the transmitter output.

    • An optical code disc includes a fine track which provides a high resolution signal, at least one V scan natural binary track synchronized to the fine track by lead and lag detectors, and Gray code tracks which provide the most significant bits of the digital output of the encoder system. The number of circuit elements in the multiplier circuitry associated with the fine track are reduced by means of a quadrant switching technique whereby the sinusoidal inputs to the multiplier are repeated through each quadrant of the fine track cycle. The V scan and Gray code tracks are optically multiplexed to reduce the number of leads from the optical detector. The use of both V scan and Gray code tracks minimizes the number of detectors required in the system while maintaining large detector signals from each track. The V scan and Gray code outputs are synchronized by the use of an overlapping bit.

    • An optical character reader for conversion of information to a machine readable code from a strip of alpha-numeric characters on the face of a document. It includes an elongated document slot along which the document may be hand guided through a predetermined path. Optical viewing means is provided across a scan line intersecting the path of the alpha-numeric characters. A character scanning assembly electronically generates images of each character. Recognition processing means encodes these images into a machine readable code. All of the physical, optical and electronic components are contained within a compact single enclosure. The character scanning assembly is located on a separable support frame that includes a surface adapted to be slidably engaged by the face of the document being read. This support frame contains the viewing slot through which light is reflected from the document face. It also rigidly mounts an array of light-responsive sensors, and an intermediate reflective mirror surface and lenses for focusing of the reflected light onto the light-responsive sensors. Since the support frame mounts the entire optical path of the apparatus, these components can be prealigned prior to being fixedly mounted to a document guiding apparatus.

    • A column sensor includes a disc which is rotatably supported at one end of a lever arm and in proximity to a card reading station of a manually operable card reader. The lever arm is itself supported for rotation and biased by a spring bearing on an end of the lever arm so that a circumferential surface of the disc is urged into contact with one of the major boundary surfaces of an elongated passageway in the card reader.     • Method and apparatus for processing input binary encoded analog signals to precisely determine the time occurrence of positive-going and negative-going transitions. Such digital signals result, for example, when bar codes (e.g. Universal Product Codes) are optically scanned. Transitions are determined by detecting the zero crossings, at selected gating times, of the second derivative of the input signals. The selected gating times occur whenever the first derivatives of the input signals exceed a threshold level. The threshold level is determined in one embodiment by peak-to-peak detecting the input signals and adding this value to a rectified noise measurement signal.
