    • An apparatus and method for feeding single sheets of laminated thermographic print media are disclosed. The apparatus includes a traveling vacuum roller reciprocatable between pickup and discharge positions under suitable control so as to engage an end of the sheet near the pickup end and roll the sheet thereabout to a selected first angular position and then releasing the sheet end at such position. The vacuum roller continues to engage the sheet and applies a vacuum to engage the other end of the sheet so as to carry it to a second angular position and then releasing the sheet by releasing the vacuum as the roller approaches the discharge position. A wrapping roller engages the vacuum roller for directing the end of the rolled sheet towards the discharge after releasing it. A lift mechanism near the discharge position lifts the vacuum roller as it approaches the discharge.

    • Optical reader apparatus for reading data on a data carrier. A housing defines a data carrier slot having an optical data window at a prearranged position. An optical reading means is mounted within the housing for reading data scanned past the optical data window. A door assembly is mounted in a hinged relation to the housing means opposite the optical read window. The door has closed and open positions and permits access to the optical data window in the open position. The door assembly carries a resilient pressure spring. The resilient pressure spring urges a data carrier passing through the data carrier slot into optical reading contact with the optical data window. The door assembly mounts the resilient spring member within a frame for easy removability. The resilient pressure spring carries an optical compensation member on a forward surface thereof so that the optical compensation member is presented to the optical data window when a data carrier is not present.

    • A batch reading system for automatically reading documents such as tags or tickets having data marked thereon in the form of human readable characters which are also automatically readable by suitable apparatus, the system being capable of feeding documents which are curled, wrinkled, bent, and otherwise deformed or mutilated. The documents are fed from an input hopper by first feed means, which may be a vacuum belt, from which they are fed to a second vacuum belt on whose underside the tags are held and fed past an underlying automatic reading device. The documents which are properly read are each stripped from the overlying vacuum belt by a flipper arm into a discharge chute, while other tickets are fed past the discharge chute to a reject stacker. To accurately laterally position the documents being fed, one of their longitudinal edges is pressed against a reference surface. The documents are fed past the reading head in a direction transverse to the various lines of data recorded on the document, whereby each line of data is presented successively to the reading head. The system is also able to handle and properly feed intermixed documents of various lengths and widths.

    • In an apparatus for accurately counting a stack of documents and especially legal tender (i.e., paper money), tests for authenticity are performed simultaneously with the counting operation and without in any way impeding the type of counting operation being performed. At the same time that the counting operation is being performed, at speeds of the order of 1250 bills per minute, each bill or note currency is tested for certain properties of genuineness, including fluorescence and magnetic characteristics. Notes which fail to satisfy the tests are categorized as suspect notes and automatically stop the machine and thereby temporarily halt the counting operation. The suspect note is isolated as the top-most document in the outfeed stacker greatly facilitating the handling and removal of the suspect bill for further examination. The presence of a suspect note further provides a visual and/or audible alarm indication thereof simultaneously with the halting of the counting operation thereby facilitating removal of the suspect note by conventional methods to permit further inspection. The circuitry provided enables counting to be immediately resumed by depressing a start button. The test may be performed when the equipment is being operated in either the batching or normal counting mode.Detection means are provided for testing fluorescence and/or magnetic properties of the bills being counted.
