    • Signals from a rudder position setting control and from a rudder position sensor constitute the only electrical information sources needed for operating a monitoring system for a rudder control that produces an alarm when the rudder control does not function effectively. The difference between the desired rudder setting and the actual rudder position, generated by a differential amplifier, is fed to a bi-directional limit circuit and a differentiating circuit is used to generate a signal corresponding to the rate of change of rudder position, which signal is likewise provided to a bi-directional limit circuit. The limit circuit outputs relating to the same polarity of error correction activate logic in an evaluation circuit so as to produce an alarm drive signal if the error signal exceeds the limit, while the rate of change of the rudder position signal for the proper direction of correction does not rise to the prescribed threshold, but the alarm generator is not enabled unless an error signal exceeding the limit persists for a predetermined period of time.

    • An improved circuit for verifying that a digital display and particularly a display formed from seven-segment gas discharge indicators is operating correctly. Cathodes of the indicator segments are driven from decoded BCD display data. The cathode of each segment is connected through a monitoring circuit to a 7-bit comparator where the actual operation of the segment is compared with the original display data. An error signal is generated if any segment fails to illuminate or extinguish in accordance with the data or if a segment is open or short-circuited. A test switch is provided for temporarily simulating an error to produce an error signal for test purposes. The circuit is adaptable for use with multiple digit displays wherein the display data is provided to the individual digits by means of multiplexing.

    • Apparatus for detecting malfunctions in rudder-type steering systems utilizes electrical order and rudder angle signals. The rudder-order signal is applied to a closed-loop simulator that includes integrating apparatus adjusted to provide a time-variant simulated rudder angle signal which varies in the same manner that the actual rudder angle signal would vary in the absence of a malfunction when exposed to the same rudder error signal. The simulated and actual rudder angle signals are compared in a summing amplifier whose output is applied to a thresholding circuit which actuates an alarm whenever the instantaneous values of the simulated and actual rudder angle signals differ by more than a predetermined amount.
