    • Apparatus and a method for calibrating a conveyor scale which measures at least the rate at which material is carried through a region by a conveyor. The scale is of a type which generates a first electric signal corresponding to the speed of the conveyor, a second electric signal corresponding to the material weight within the region and from these signals generates a third signal corresponding to the material transfer rate. During calibration of the conveyor scale, an electric signal is generated to correspond to a simulated conveyor speed. The simulated speed signal is used in combination with a predetermined weight signal for obtaining a transfer rate signal. The weight signal is generated either by placing the predetermined weight on the stopped conveyor or by an electric signal generator which simulates the predetermined weight. The conveyor scale is then calibrated such that the indicated transfer rate corresponds to an actual transfer rate determined from the simulated conveyor speed and the predetermined material weight. The apparatus and method also may be used to calibrate a conveyor scale which measures the total weight of material transferred over a period of time.

    • A vent plug for use with a gear case containing lubrication oil and rotating transmission elements and having an opening in its side wall, the plug comprising a fitting adapted to engage and close the opening. The fitting has an engaging body portion proportioned and designed to be disposed in the wall opening and an outer body portion proportioned and designed to extend outwardly from the wall. The fitting is provided with an axially extending bore entering the inner end of the engaging body portion and terminating with a closed end in the outer body portion, the bore having an outer section of a first diameter and an inner section of a second and greater diameter. The inner section of the bore terminates in the outer body portion, and the fitting also has, in the outer body portion, a transaxially extending opening venting the outer section of the bore and a second transaxially extending opening venting the inner section of the bore. A tube is concentrically and axially disposed in the bore to extend axially into the interior of the case to provide communication between the outer bore section and the interior of the case. The tube has an outer diameter less than the said second diameter to provide an annular passageway communicating between the inner bore section and the interior of the case.

    • A printing and punching machine, which is particularly adaptable for the weighing, printing and punching indicia on artillery shells. The machine includes a loading station, two weighing stations, a printing and punching station and an unloading station. Preferably the stations are equally spaced apart and a walking beam mechanism advances an individual artillery shell to successive stations after it has initially been manually placed at the loading station. The artillery shell is weighed at the first weighing station and then weighed again at the second weighing station. If the two weights compare, the proper printing pad and the proper punches are automatically actuated in the printing mechanism. The printing and punching mechanism than moves from a home position and is inked by a multiple roller inking mechanism. The printing and punching mechanism then passes over and engages the artillery shell which is in the printing station. At the end of a cycle, the printing mechanism returns to its home position and the walking beam mechanism advances the shell to the unloading station where it is manually unloaded.

    • An elevator control for systems in which cars ordinarily run only to those hall calls specifically assigned to the individual cars wherein cars are automatically recalled to a primary service floor at which there is a high rate of passenger entries. The service from the primary service floor is enhanced by restricting response of the cars to hall calls. One restriction level is to eliminate service to all hall calls, another to eliminate service to certain hall calls, a third to permit only a limited number of cars departing from the primary service floor to serve hall calls in either the entire range or the restricted range. Where there are special floors served by less than all cars in the group, the cars permitted to serve hall calls can be made to include cars capable of serving those special floors. Cars are recalled only when they have concluded their service in traveling from the primary service floor. Recall service can be established by manual or clock controlled switch or by sensing a condition indicative of a need for such service. One such condition is a count of car calls in ascending cars where recall is to a lower main floor.
