    • A dispenser for disc-shaped car-park tickets which makes it possible on a permanent basis for the car-park tickets provided for issuing to be made available reliably, as required, from a supply of car-park tickets, and which is of simple design. The dispenser separates car-park tickets coming from a supply container and moves them, in a pushed group, through a transporting duct which bridges a spatial distance between the supply container and the issuing apparatus. In addition to the spatial distance bridged, a vertical ascent is also surmounted, in order that the car-park tickets can be moved into the issuing apparatus and issued from the same under the action of gravity. Further configurations of the invention can be gathered from the claims and from the following description.

    • Disclosed is an Expected Value Payment Method for the purpose of reducing the expected per unit costs incurred in paying and/or receiving a given amount of a commodity. An Expected Value Payment Method uses a random number supplier to decide bets that can reduce expected per unit costs in two ways. First, expected per unit costs can be reduced for the payer and/or receiver of a commodity by giving the receiver a chance to win a greater amount of the commodity than a given amount, the greater amount having a lower per unit cost than the given amount which was originally to be paid and received. Second, a probabalistic sorting method and system is disclosed allowing businesses to offer customers who bet to win a given amount of a commodity a better expected price for that amount than the price offered to customers paying conventionally. Also disclosed are Expected Value Payment Execution Methods and Systems that make an Expected Value Payment Method practical in the marketplace and methods and systems for preventing cheating in expected value payment bets.

    • A computerized parking system which includes a first camera for reading the license plate of a vehicle entering a parking area, and a second camera for reading the license plate of the vehicle as it leaves the parking area. In each instance, the letters and numbers on the license plate of each vehicle are converted into digital signals. The system responds to the digital signals from the cameras to determine the time of entry and time of exit of the vehicle, and the time vehicle remained in the parking area is then determined. The parking fee due for each vehicle is computed on the basis of a predetermined rate or rates and on the time in which the particular vehicle remained in the parking area. The system then produces a ticket, or a visual display, at a cashier's station at the exit on which the amount to be paid is recorded, and when that amount is paid the cashier opens the gate. In the case of a monthly customer, the gate may be opened automatically as the particular vehicle reaches the exit gate, and the amount due for that vehicle is accumulated within the computer for monthly billing. The system may also be automatic for the daily customer, with a currency machine being provided which opens the exit gate when the proper parking fee has been inserted into the machine.

    • A magnetically selective token system comprises valid tokens which are nonmagnetically responsive in the peripheral portions thereof and responsive in the central portions thereof and a token acceptor which is operative for segregating valid tokens from various types of counterfeit tokens. Unspecified tokens inserted into the acceptor are individually passed to an upper token station where first magnetic elements are operative for magnetically communicating with only the peripheral portions of the tokens so that counterfeit tokens having magnetically responsive peripheral portions are retained at the upper station, whereas other types of unspecified tokens are individually passed to a lower station. Second magnetic elements are operative for magnetically communicating with the central portions of tokens at the lower station so that valid tokens are retained at the lower station, whereas nonmagnetically responsive counterfeit tokens pass to a first outlet slot. The acceptor is operative for removing counterfeit tokens from the upper station and guiding them to the first outlet slot and for removing valid tokens from the lower station and guiding them to a second outlet slot so that they are segregated from the counterfeit tokens. The method of segregating valid tokens from counterfeit tokens includes the steps of exposing only the peripheral portions of unspecified tokens to first magnetic elements to separate out magnetically responsive counterfeit tokens and then exposing the central portions of the remaining token to second magnetic elements to separate out valid tokens.

    • A turnstile construction wherein arms normally block the path of movement of persons passing through the turnstile. The arms are engaged when authorized passage is available, and this results in movement of the arms either by the force of the person passing through or in a motor-assisted fashion. The head supporting the arms includes a control system including a drive gear tied to the arms for rotation during movement of the arms. Rotatable locking members are connected to the drive gear, and engaging arms are movable into and out of engagement with the locking members for purposes of controlling use of the turnstile. The engaging arms are normally controlled by the deposit of a proper fare whereby in the course of normal use, only persons paying a fare can pass through the turnstile. When locked, the system automatically protects against breakaway even when an extreme load is applied. A governor is included in the system in a fashion such that bi-directional speed control is automatically provided in all modes of use. The construction is designed for controlling the direction through which persons may pass; it can be efficiently set for free-wheeling in one direction, but will lock automatically in a position so that improper use by partial movement of the turnstile arms is prevented. Also included is an automatic disengaging function to permit passage in both directions during emergencies and other circumstances where fares are not to be collected.
