    • A variable mechanical advantage/variable effective length shifting mechanism (30) is provided, preferably for shifting a synchronized positive clutch transmission. A compound mechanism comprises a first member (34) in the form of a variable mechanical advantage/variable effective length first class lever having a first lever portion (34), a second lever portion (42) and a fixed pivot axis (38), and a second member (44) in the form of a second class lever pivotably mounted about a pivot axis (70) extending substantially parallel to and spaced from the first pivot axis. A pivot pin (48) extending substantially parallel to the first and second pivot axis is slidably received in axially extending slots (46 and 84) provided in the first and second members, respectively. A resilient biasing member (58) is provided for resiliently biasing the pivot pin axially away from the first pivot axis and axially toward the second pivot axis. The pivot pin may overcome the bias of the biasing member to move toward the first pivot axis and away from the second pivot axis to increase the mechanical advantage of the compound mechanism by increasing the mechanical advantage of both the first class lever member and the second class lever member. The second class second member carries a shift finger (32) for pivotal movement therewith about the second pivot axis.

    • A variable mechanical advantage/variable effective length torque arm assembly (100) for a synchronized transmission is provided. The torque arm assembly comprises a substantially rigid body (102) fixedly mounted to a shift shaft (36) at one end (104) thereof for axial and rotational movement therewith. The body is provided with an axially extending elongated slot (106) in which a pivot pin (124) is received for pivotably attaching an axially movable control rod (22) to the body of the torque arm assembly. A biasing spring (134) bias the pivot pin to a first end of the slot closer to the axis of the shift shaft to define a first effective length (138) of the torque arm assembly which biasing force may be overcome by a sufficient resistance to rotation of the shift shaft (36) allowing the pivot pin to move away from the axis of the shift shaft to define a second effective length (140) of the torque arm assembly greater than the first effective length.

    • The decoupling device is used for connecting the rods, especially gearshift rods disposed between the transmission and the gearshift lever of a motor vehicle. The incorporation of the device into the gearshift linkage permits to and fro movement of the decoupled gearshift rod and suspends the rigid connection between the gearshift lever and the transmission after the transmission has been shifted into a gear. A form-locking connection between the two gearshift rods is only established at the time of selecting or shifting in and out of a gear. The suspension of the rigid connection between the gearshift lever and the transmission effected by the decoupling device eliminates the problem of gear-jumping.The decoupling device incorporates a displaceable intermediate member adapted to control the decoupling operation, which is disposed between ends of the gearshift rods which are in engagement with one another and are located inside a tubular member. The intermediate member is supported on a blade disposed on one of the gearshift rods and is provided with a decoupling element which is cooperating with depressions in the blade and/or the channel of the gearshift rod for establishing a form-locking connection. Furthermore, the intermediate member is provided with locking means which engage with depressions provided in the tubular member surrounding the ends of the gearshift rods. It is also possible to provide coupling between the two gearshift rods that is of the force-locking type.

    • A transmission operating device includes a hand lever connected through a control rod to a control shaft of a transmission. In a front-engine and front-wheel-drive car, the engine is traversely arranged and therefore the axis of the control shaft is often located considerably traversely from the longitudinal center axis of the car. According to the invention, a universal joint of the control rod on the side of the control shaft of the transmission is traversely offset toward the longitudinal axis of the car to reduce the deviation of movement of a knob at the upper end of the hand lever from a speed selecting pattern, thereby improving the feeling of speed selecting operation.

    • A selector mechanism for motor vehicle change speed gears, utilizing a single change speed lever for operating both a ratio selector member for a ratio-change gearbox, and a range selector member for a two-speed unit arranged to give one or more ratios additional to those obtainable from the ratio-change gearbox.
