    • The present invention provides a method for drying a coating film comprising drying a coating film of an organic solvent-containing coating liquid applied to a running band-shaped flexible substrate, the drying method comprising the steps of: providing a heater at a position opposed to the band-shaped flexible substrate at a running position immediately after coating; and heating the band-shaped flexible substrate by the heater; wherein when TW (° C.) denotes the surface temperature of the band-shaped flexible substrate; TH (° C.) denotes the surface temperature of the heater; λ (W/m·K) denotes the heat-transfer coefficient of air; d(m) denotes the distance between the heater and the band-shaped flexible substrate (web); η denotes the efficiency of heat transfer; and σ denotes the Stefan-Boltzmann constant (5.670×10−8 W/m2K4), the ratio of radiant heat transfer represented by QR/(QR+QC) is 0.25 or more and 0.6 or less, wherein QC and QR are represented by the following equations, respectively: QC=λ/d·(TH−TW) where QC denotes heat transfer by air, and QR=η{(TH+273)4−(Tw+273)4} where QR denotes heat transfer by radiant.

    • For drying coatings of solvent-based adhesive applied to shoe bottoms a through-flow drying apparatus is provided which utilises air at ambient temperature for the constant rate period (i.e. the period during which the surface of the coating is "wet"), and thereafter applies infra-red heating during the falling rate period (i.e. the period when migration of the solvent through the solid adhesive is to be achieved). In the first stage, jets of air are directed against the shoe bottom at a velocity of not less than 15 meters/second (measured at the inlets (38)), while at the heating station a plate heater (42) of a size which is larger than the area of the shoe bottom is provided. Ideally, when the shoe is removed from the apparatus, an outsole having a reactivated coating of adhesive can be located with the shoe bottom and bonded thereto, without reactivation of the shoe bottom adhesive itself. Also disclosed is a shoe support (46) for supporting shoes of a wide range of sizes with little or no need for adjustment, said support comprising a plurality of pairs of shoe-engaging rolls (60, 62, 64) between which the downwardly depending portions of the shoe last can be accommodated.

    • An apparatus for curing ink screen print on articles, particularly large articles such as pails or barrels, includes a rotatable turntable having a plurality of spin table compartments each of which is to receive a pail and carry the same in a circular path past a radiation source covered by a housing at a curing station. Each article is spun as it reaches the curing station to assure complete irradiation about the circumference of each article. The housing is provided with a large opening to facilitate loading of articles onto the spin tables and removal of articles with cured ink from the spin tables. An ejector mechanism is mounted on the apparatus to automatically eject cured articles from the turntable to reduce the labor needed to operate the apparatus. The preferred ejecter mechanism includes a fluid cylinder having a pusher mounted centrally of the turntable, and operable to extend into a compartment to push an article therefrom onto a takeaway conveyor. Operation of the ejector mechanism disables the turntable drive mechanism.

    • A heated metal plate dryin system for drying either green veneer or partially dried veneer can have a plurality of modular hot presses mounted on a frame. At a loading station, individual sheets of veneer to be dried or redried are fed into a hot press, and at an unloading station the dried veneer sheets are unloaded from the system. Within each individual modular hot press, a direct contact drying process occurs that functions to reduce the moisture content of a veneer sheet down to the desired uniform level such as within a range of from 1 to 10%. The drying process accepts veneer of different species, thickness, and beginning moisture contents and the controlled process variables include contact time, temperature and pressure.Each individual modular press can be multi-opening and has the ability to open and close on command. Specially designed heated metal plates are part of each press and each plate has substantially parallel grooves on at least one surface. The modular presses are mounted on the frame such that they may be tilted at the unloading station to facilitate unloading of the dried veneer sheets. At the loading station, a loading apparatus functions to sequentially feed individual veneer sheets into the openings. The loading apparatus is pivotally mounted. Also provided is an aligning apparatus for ensuring proper alignment of each veneer sheet within its respective opening after being loaded. The modular presses in one embodiment are mounted on a carousel frame structure that is rotatable on a main bearing so each modular press indexes past the loading and unloading stations.
