    • In a power plant, for example of PFBC type, with a cooler for cooling of ashes originating in a fluidized bed, the cooler comprises a cylinder with a transport screw which transports the ashes through the cylinder. The transport screw has a tubular shaft which is transversed by cooling water. The cylinder may be air or water-cooled. At the bottom of the cylinder one or more fluidization devices are provided, which maintain the ashes in the cylinder in fluidized condition, so as to obtain good contact and effective heat transfer to cooling surfaces of the shaft and the cylinder. The fluidization also reduces the propensity of the ash to form a heat-insulating layer on the inside of the cylinder which reduces the cooling capacity.

    • A pressure-reducing valve for a dust-entraining gaseous or liquid fluent flow comprises a vertical tube containing a bed of particles which are fluidized by the flow. The particles have considerably greater specific weight than the dust in the flow, so that the particles in the bed are not carried away by the flow. The valve may be used to permit the continuous egress of a dust-contaminated flow from a pressurized container, for example a cyclone, while maintaining the pressure in the container. If the fluent flow is hot, the valve tube may be surrounded by a cooling jacket for extracting heat therefrom. The height of the bed in the tube may be adjusted to and from a particle storage, at the lower and upper ends, respectively, of the tube.

    • A valve and duct means are provided to extract ash-laden air from the combustion chamber of an incinerator and direct it to fly ash separators and a finer filter in order that small particles of ash may be separated from the air before the air is exhausted to atmosphere. An alternate path is provided to remove ash remaining in the combustion chamber after an incineration cycle is completed. Ash-laden air from the combustion chamber is directed to a cyclone separator to remove larger particles of ash from the air. The air is then sent through the fly ash separators and the finer filter in order to remove any remaining smaller particles of ash. The air is then returned to the combustion chamber where particles of ash remaining therein are stirred up by the returning air. Electrical circuitry is provided so that operation of the ash removal apparatus is substantially automatic. A protective circuit prevents operation of the ashremoval apparatus if the temperature in the combustion chamber is above a predetermined level.
