    • A one-piece, circular, power end seal for use in sealing gear boxes of heavy-duty reciprocating pumps. The power end seal generally includes a u-shaped, circular seal body having an open channel, a plurality of ribs tangentially mounted within the channel and a ring-shaped, fiber-filled dynamic seal being formed within an inner diameter wear surface of the seal body. The ribs generally provide the seal body with improved flexibility to maintain a constant and effective seal around connecting rods within the gear box, while at the same time retaining sufficient resilience to maintain static interference in a packing gland within the gear box. The inner diameter dynamic seal can be filled with PTFE, bronze filled PTFE, carbon filled PTFE or aramid fiber filled HNBR, which reduces heat build up and seal wear, while minimizing the radial squeeze of the seal in contact with the circumference of the connecting rod.

    • A shaft sealing apparatus is provided which can easily be assembled and arranged to prevent leakage of a dope from an acetylator or the like system. A screw sleeve 12 having a spiral groove 16 provided in the outer side thereof is mounted on a rotary shaft 2 adjacent to a location where the rotary shaft 2 extends through a housing. As the screw sleeve 12 rotates together with the rotary shaft 2, it can return back the dope into the housing thus providing a sealing effect. The screw sleeve 12 comprises six segments fabricated by separating circumferentially into two and axially into three. The six segments 18, 20, 24, 26, 33, and 35 are jointed together to assemble a generally cylindrical structure on the rotary shaft 2. The assembling process can easily be conducted from two radial directions on the rotary shaft 2 between the housing and each bearing unit supporting the rotary shaft without disassembling the bearing units.

    • Preferred rod/piston assemblies (50, 50null, 150) comprise unitary rod members (52, 52null, 152) and compression rings (54, 54null, 154). In accordance with one preferred embodiment (50), the unitary rod member (52) comprises a connecting rod portion (60), a lower bezel portion (62) and a knob portion (66). The lower bezel portion (62) and the compression ring (54) define facing surfaces (82, 106) along which the compression ring (54) is secured to the unitary rod member (52). In accordance with a preferred method of manufacture, one or both of the facing surfaces (82, 106) are chemically treated to promote coupling of the compression (54) ring to the lower bezel portion (62). The unitary rod member (52) and the compression ring (54) are positioned in the mold or press with the compression ring (54) fitted over the knob portion (66) of the unitary rod member. Elevated temperature and pressure are applied to secure the compression ring (54) to the lower bezel portion (62). Among the advantages of the preferred structure are minimization the number of parts which must be supplied to form the preferred rod/piston assemblies (50, 50null, 150) and simplification of the processes for their construction.

    • In a gas turbine having a chordal hinge seal between an inner rail of each nozzle segment and an annular axially facing sealing surface of a nozzle support ring, a supplemental seal is disposed between the support ring and inner rail of the nozzle segment on a lower pressure side of the chordal hinge seal. The supplemental seal comprises a segmented annular composite tubular woven compliant seal disposed in a cavity along a sealing surface of the inner rail of the segment. The seal bears against the annular sealing surface of the nozzle support ring, which compresses the seal. Because of the compliant nature of the seal, a supplemental seal is formed on the low pressure side of the chordal hinge seal.

The foam seal elements depend radially inward into the sealing channel so as to form a circuitous sealing labyrinth therein. The seal elements are formed preferably from polyurethane.
