The passageway is in fluid communication with a clutch. A bore communicates oil from the passageway to a passageway provided in the clutch. An annular seal is sealingly engaged with the bore of the case and the clutch to provide a fluid conduit therebetween. A compliant member is provided between the annular seal and the cover member to axially urge the seal into sealing engagement with the outer surface of the clutch.

The foot clutch valve is connected parallel to the pressure control device. The pressure control device is formed by a changeover valve indirectly reversible by the shift valve by which the pressure controlled in the supply pressure line can be fed to two shift pressure lines which are connected to a valve device. At the same time, the valve device is so controlled by the foot clutch valve that the effective shift clutch pressure can be controlled without influencing the position of the changeover valve as a function of the actuation of the foot clutch. The hydraulic load power train control, on the one hand, makes possible, in the case of engaging or reversing of the shift clutches, a smooth transition from one gear to the other and, at the same time, a delay-free start in the shifting by actuation of the foot clutch.

    • A control device for a hyudraulic friction clutch for a motor vehicle, wherein a piston is moved by a pressurized fluid supplied to a pressure chamber, to effect frictional engagement between driving and driven rotary members, and a proximity shut-off valve is disposed in the piston, for permitting the fluid to be discharged from the pressure chamber through a discharge passage when the piston has reached a ready-to-operate position from which the piston is moved to start the frictional engagement. The control device includes a hydraulic pressure source generating a predetermined line pressure, a pressure adjusting device for adjusting the line pressure to a controlled clutch pressure, a clutch control valve for applying the controlled clutch pressure to the pressure chamber to advance the piston for effecting the frictional engagement of the rotary members, and a controller for commanding the pressure adjusting device to adjust the line pressure to a predetermined lower level, when the controller commands the clutch control valve to supply the pressurized fluid to the pressure chamber for moving the piston to the ready-to-operate position. Thus, drag due to partial engagement of the clutch with the piston at the ready-to-operate position is minimized or eliminated.

    • Hydraulic controls in a transmission for engaging a clutch for the F-R, or forward or reverse, direction before a clutch for first, second, or third speed. Flow of hydraulic fluid to each direction clutch and to each speed clutch is by way of a reducing valve which modulates fluid pressure in controlled way by throttling the flow. After the power unit for the clutch for the F-R clutches and the power unit for the clutch for first, second or third speed are filled with fluid by the reducing valve, pressure in the power units is then slowly raised by the valve linearly toward its maximum; for this purpose the hydraulic controls are supplied by a single source of hydraulic fluid and operate therefrom to provide a pair of modulated pressure outputs which are maintained with varying differences throughout their range of operation, and which operate the selected one of the F-R clutches and the selected one of the first second or third clutches. The F-R clutches are the ones which receive the higher modulated pressure output and which are constructed, proportioned in size, and arranged to have a higher speed capability and smaller energy absorbing capacity in their design, and they operate so as to be fully hydraulically engaged at the higher pressure output, and hence slightly before, the speed clutches.

    • A method and apparatus for increased clutch capacity in an automatic vehicle transmission having a nested clutch pair. An electronic control unit controls a pulse width modulator which applies control signals to the actuating solenoid valves of the nested pair of clutches. The electronic control unit operates to reduce the pressure on an engaged clutch of the pair during the period of time that the other clutch is being actuated during the shift. Once the shift is completed, the operating pressure on the previously engaged clutch is restored to a normal operating pressure. Provisions are also made for assuring that the period of time required for the shift is maintained between threshold limits or within a window of time. This adaptive feature precludes excessively short or long shifts.
