    • A vacuum advance regulator designed to control the suction force of the vacuum that is applied to the vacuum advancer. The suction, in turn, controls the spark timing and allows combustion to occur when the crank position is at 12 degrees at the ATDC, thus, producing maximum engine power efficiency. The regulator consists of a body (1) containing in part, a vacuum chamber (2) that is connected to the outside of the body by a pair of nipples (3) that are inserted through a first bore (4) and a second bore (4'). The other side of the nipples are connected to a vacuum hose (11). One side of this hose is connected to the vacuum advancer while the other side is connected to the carburetor. The vacuum advance regulator also includes a pair of parallel adjustable throttles (5) and (5') that are in-line with the vacuum chamber (2). The two adjustable throttles provide the adjustment means that allows the vacuum force to set the spark timing.

    • An apparatus for controlling the timing of ignition of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus includes a cylinder pressure sensor sensitive to combustion pressure in a cylinder for providing a signal indicative of a sensed cylinder combustion pressure, and a control circuit responsive to the cylinder combustion pressure indicative signal for controlling the engine ignition timing. The control circuit measures a crankshaft angle at which the cylinder combustion pressure is at maximum. The control circuit retards the ignition timing when the measured crankshaft angle is less than a first value and advances the ignition timing when the measured crankshaft angle is greater than a second value greater than the first value. The control circuit retails the ignition timing to interrupt the feedback control of the ignition timing when the measured crankshaft angle is in a range defined by the first and second values. This is effective to eliminate a tendency toward unstable engine operation resulting from the conventional manner in which the ignition timing is re-adjusted at more frequent intervals than is required.

    • Vacuum operated apparatus for controlling the ignition timing of an engine, which apparatus comprises valve means and first, second, third and fourth conduit means, the valve means comprising a first chamber, first and second ports in the first chamber, first obturator means for opening and closing the second port, a second chamber, third and fourth ports in the second chamber, and second obturator means for opening and closing the fourth port, the first conduit means being for connecting the first port to an engine inlet manifold, the third conduit means being for connecting the third port to an engine carburetor, and the second and fourth conduit means being for connecting the second and fourth ports respectively to an engine distributor, and the apparatus being such that in use the valve means receives first vacuum forces from the inlet manifold via the first conduit means and second vacuum forces from the carburetor via the third conduit means, the valve means being operative to transmit the greater of the first and the second vacuum forces via the second and the fourth ports and the second and fourth conduit means to the engine distributor so that the engine distributor always receives the optimum vacuum force for causing the optimum adjustment of the engine distributor.
