    • An arrangement limits a fuel supply from a fuel pressure reservoir by way of a controllable injection valve into the combustion space of an internal-combustion engine. The fuel flow is interrupted as a function of the forces applied to a spring-prestressed valve separating piston in the event of an outlet-side pressure drop. A reliable limiting of the maximal injected fuel quantity is achieved by providing a flow-through opening penetrating the separating piston with a closing device. This flow-through opening can be closed as a function of the displacing direction of the separating piston. If the displacing device closes the flow-through opening in the starting position, during the injection phase and in the piston end position, the limiting valve will continuously interrupt the fuel flow in the case of an outlet-side pressure drop. Alternatively, the flow-through opening is such that a fuel filter cartridge can be inserted into the separating piston, through which fuel, which was apportioned between two respective injection phases, flows during the restoring stroke.

    • In a closed-nozzle fuel injector, an injection timing chamber and an injection chamber and a metering plunger/valve moving in a bore between them. A passage from the injection chamber to the injection spray ports is closed by a needle valve. A piston cup seats one end of a needle valve closing spring, the other end being seated on the needle timing spill passageway is opened by a metering plunger and spills fuel from the injector timing chamber to drive an injection needle-valve-spring-loading-piston away from a rest position toward the spring seat on the valve and apply additional force on the valve-closing-spring at the end of injection. In one embodiment, a passageway from the space above the spring-loading piston to a drain line has an orifice therein to maintain pressure atop the piston to hold the valve closed long enough for combustion pressure in the cylinder to drop before return of the spring seat piston to original rest position. In another embodiment, a ring valve is used, rather than the orificed passageway, to control the rate of spill and thereby maintain pressure for the needed duration. In both embodiments, travel of the piston in a spring loading direction is limited by an abutment shoulder to limit total maximum closing force of the needle valve on the valve seat. Other embodiments positively vent the injection chamber through a restricted passageway to drain during timing fuel spill, for decompression of injection fuel in the injector at the end of injection.

    • A fuel injection system for alternate fuels such as coal-water slurry comprises a conventional fuel injection pump for supplying timed and metered pulses of diesel fuel to an injector assembly. The injector assembly includes a shuttle piston in a cylinder which is connected at one end by an injection line to the pump and at the other end by a passage to an injection nozzle. The alternate fuel is introduced into the injector assembly passage under pressure through a check valve between injection intervals. A bleed passage in the pump delivery valve provides a rapid pressure decay in the injection line following injection, permitting the shuttle piston to return to its starting position under the influence of the alternate fuel pressure. The timed and metered injection pulses are transferred by the shuttle piston from the diesel fuel to the alternate fuel to open the injection nozzle and inject the alternate fuel into an engine cylinder.

    • A fuel injection pump for diesel engines comprises a housing, which contains a cylinder sleeve that has at least one radial fuel port. An injector plunger is slidably mounted in the cylinder sleeve and has two axially spaced apart valving edges for cooperation with the fuel port. The plunger is coupled to a plunger follower, which is movably mounted in the housing and which is operable by a camshaft via an actuating member against the force of a return spring. The stroke position of the plunger is adjustable by means of a stop, which is adjustable by means of a timing piston, which is movable in a timing cylinder, which is supplied with hydraulic oil through a check valve. To simplify the structure and to permit the stroke position of the plunger to be adjusted at a high speed, the timing cylinder is constituted by the plunger follower and is formed with an oil outlet port, which communicates with an outlet opening of the housing at the end of the discharge stroke of the plunger. The plunger is coupled to the plunger follower with an axial backlash, which is adapted to be reduced by means of the timing piston.

    • A fuel injection control apparatus for use in an engine wherein fuel injection is controlled in accordance with the conditions of the engines operation. This apparatus is provided with a fuel quantity control unit of the distribution type which measures and discharges an amount of fuel in response to detection signals which represent the conditions of the engines operation, and with a plurality of unit injectors for distributing and supplying fuel to their respective engine cylinders, said fuel being set and measured by the fuel quantity control unit. Each of said unit injectors comprises a compression plunger driven by a cam system which is rotated by a rotation shaft of said engine, a compression pump chamber whose fuel pressure is set by the operation of said compression plunger, an injection plunger driven by the fuel pressure in the compression pump chamber, an injection pump chamber which is filled with fuel whose pressure has been set by the operation of said injection plunger and whose amount has been adjusted by the fuel amount adjuster means, and a timing plunger whose position is set by the amount of fuel adjusted, wherein the fuel pressure in the compression pump chamber caused when the compression plunger is driven causes the timing plunger to move to a specified position and then acts on the injection plunger to raise the pressure in the injection pump chamber, thereby enabling the quantity-adjusted fuel in the injection pump chamber to be injected.
