    • A cylinder block is produced by subjecting an outer surface of a cylinder sleeve section Sc of cast iron to a shot blast treatment, forming a first intermediate layer 31 of aluminum-based material containing Si, Cu and the like on the cylinder section Sc, and inserting the cylinder sleeve section Sc in a cast-in manner within a cylinder barrel 1.sub.U of aluminum alloy. The electrical-potential difference between the cylinder sleeve section Sc and the cylinder barrel 1.sub.U and the first intermediate layer 31 is decreased by the first intermediate layer 31 to enhance the durability against an electrolytic corrosion and to enhance the deposition by a mutual diffusing action therebetween. In a modification, a second intermediate layer 32 of a Ni-Al based material is formed under the first intermediate layer 31 at a portion of the cylinder sleeve section Sc inserted in a cast-in manner within the cylinder barrel 1.sub.U, whereby the adhesion can be further enhanced.

    • An engine block for an internal combustion engine including at least one bore, and a cylindrical liner that is pressed into the bore to define the inner cylindrical surface along which the piston reciprocates. The inner surface of the bore and the outer surface of the liner are each coated with a zinc or zinc alloy coating that is metallurgically bonded to the respective surfaces to form intermetallic bonds. The liner is pressed into the bore while the liner and bore are at an elevated temperature approximately corresponding to the melting temperature of zinc, in order to unite the liner and block by means of a metallurgical bond. The metallurgical bond is substantially continuous to provide a continuous metallic path for improved heat transfer and structural strength between the liner and the block material. The liner can be formed either from cast iron or from an aluminum alloy, and the engine block is preferably cast from an aluminum alloy.

    • A device and method for substantially reducing corrosion of an engine cylinder which includes a means for changing the pattern of current flow of cooling water between the wall of the cylinder and wall of cavity within the engine block. In one embodiment, the device is a metal strip, clipped into the edges of the entrance and extending into the cavity where it disrupts the flow of water along to flow in a substantially continuous circumferential direction. In this situation, the device is a bent strip of steel, having a detente for engaging the device in the entrance to the cooling cavity area and extending into the cavity where it changes the pattern of current flow. Other configurations serving the same purpose would depend on the design of the engine block.

    • An improved liner particularly useful for the prevention of pitting and corrosion of portions of an internal combustion engine, particularly a diesel engine, which contact a circulating coolant, the invention provides a coating over at least those portions of a "wet" cylinder block liner normally in contact with a coolant liquid, the coating being comprised of a polymerized resin, particularly the reaction product of a free radical catalyzed oxidatively coupled polyester resin. The polymeric coating of the invention is disposed over, conforms to, and adheres to those surfaces of a "wet" cylinder block liner normally in contact with a coolant liquid.
