    • A welding stud designed to have reduced weight without loss of strength by having a stepped diameter, cylindrical form shank with a relatively thin head. The head is centrally depressed and the shank is of a first relatively large diameter closely adjacent the head and is extruded to a smaller diameter from there to the end opposite the head. The weight is additionally reduced by providing the head with a central depression which extends into the head from the axial outer end. The method of forming the stud starts with a workpiece of a diameter larger than the final desired stud diameter and cold heading the workpiece to form the stud head. Thereafter, the shank of the workpiece from a point spaced from the head to the free end of the shank is extruded through a circular die to reduce its diameter to the desired final diameter throughout the majority of its length.

    • A knot for connecting pillars and girders includes a first member adapted to be mounted on a pillar, and a plurality of second members which are each adapted to be connected to a respective girder. The number of second members is equal to the number of girders to be coupled with the pillar. The first member is made up of an upper plate and a lower plate that are coaxial and vertically spaced with respect to each other. These plates each have a number of sides equal to the number of the girders that converge onto the knot. The first member has a first coupling. The lower and upper plates are vertically coupled to each other by joining tongues which have second couplings. The second member has first and second horizontal plates which are vertically spaced from each other, and these plates are provided with a third coupling that couples with the first coupling of the first member. The first and second plates are joined by a transverse vertical plate and a longitudinal vertical plate. The longitudinal vertical plate has a fourth coupling that couples with the second coupling.

    • A method is described for constructing a concrete building from precast concrete wall and floor panels. Each floor construction has a plurality of spaced-apart dowels which project upwardly above its surface along the proposed joint between the floor and a proposed wall, and each of the wall panels includes along its length vertical voids which extend for its full height at a spacing from one another generally the same as the spacing between the dowels projecting upward from the floor construction. The load bearing walls of the building are formed by erecting wall panels for the same vertically at the proposed joint with the dowels extending into the wall panel voids. Reinforcing rods are introduced into the voids to overlap the ones projecting upward from the floor, and the voids are filled with mortar to tie each of such wall panels to the floor below. A mortar junction resistant to horizontal shear forces is formed between the floor construction and the wall panel at the time the panel is otherwise interlocked to the floor to resist vertical stress forces. The floor construction is formed by supporting floor panels horizontally adjacent one another spanning the space between a pair of parallel, load bearing wall panels. Post-tensioning cables are positioned between and threaded through such floor panels, and recessed keyways are provided at the joints between adjacent panels. Mortar placed in such joints interlocks the adjacent panels to resist horizontal shear stresses, and the cables are post-tensioned to otherwise support and tie the floor panels together to resist vertical loading and seismic forces.

    • A hollow cored concrete slab is the product of the method which includes casting a base layer of concrete into a suitable form. Placing precast concrete channel members in transversely spaced relation on the freshly cast base layer with the flanges of the members in contact with the base layer and the webs of the members in spaced relation from the base layer. Casting an upper layer of concrete onto the fresh base layer and around the channel members and striking the upper layer in spaced relation above the channel members so that the upper layer of concrete covers the webs of the channel members to a given depth. The slab is then cured with the channel members remaining a structural part thereof and providing for the transversely spaced hollow cores therein.
