In the device, a controller rotating mechanism controls the rotational angle of the controller so that the upper knife rocking shaft is allowed to turn in the case of a chain stitch in which the knife is used, and the upper knife rocking shaft is not allowed to turn in the case of a chain stitch in which the knife is not used, and also a controller shaft moving mechanism moves the controller shaft so that the upper knife rocking arm is moved downwardly in the case of a chain stitch in which the knife is used, and the upper knife rocking arm is retracted upwardly in the case of a chain stitch in which the knife is not used.

    • An automatic notching device in a sewing machine comprises a worm engaged with a worm gear fixed to a driving shaft of the sewing machine, a driving cam having a cam portion formed with a plurality of protrusions and a cylindrical boss portion, and an actuating link pivotally moved dependant on the movement of said cam. A cutter-holding member is provided to move upwardly and downwardly by the movement of actuating link transmitted via a linkage member and a swing arm. During the movement of the cutter-holding member, the cutter cooperates with a cutter-guiding member disposed adjacent to a side of needle-guiding member, in order to effect a simultaneous notching operation in sewing a curved portion of garment. The notching device further comprises a push rod having at one end a lever and at the other end a yoke. An actuating shaft is connected at one end to said yoke and has a roller at its other end. Depending upon the position of the lever the roller is moved upwardly or downwardly. When the roller engages said cam portion it is in a notching position, whereas when it engages said boss portion it is in a non-notching position.

    • A sewing machine comprises a rotatable main shaft which drives a needle upwardly and downwardly over a sewing station to sew through material which is moved thereover and which includes a trimming knife mounted adjacent the needle for upward and downward movement for selectively and periodically cutting the material. The trimming knife is driven by a linkage mechanism from an eccentric drive and the eccentric drive is detachably connected between the main shaft and the linkage mechanism and permits the knife to be driven with the mainshaft of the sewing machine or by an independent drive through a separate detachable drive mechanism. In one embodiment a positioning motor is connected to the drive through a hand wheel and an engageable and disengageable clutch so that it may drive a linkage mechanism including an eccentric to move the knife upwardly and downwardly for cutting the material being sewn during the operation of the sewing machine or separately when the sewing machine drive is discontinued. The drive is defined from the positioning motor to the hand wheel and through a clutch to the main shaft of the sewing machine which drives an eccentric for operating the linkage mechanism to reciprocate the knife. Another embodiment includes a separate trimming drive including two free wheel clutch arrangements permitting the knife to be driven synchronously with the sewing machine needle drive as well as its separate drive.

    • A cutting apparatus for cutting a strip of tape connected to a shoe upper component and extending beyond the edges thereof includes a blade for cutting the tape and presser feet for tensioning the tape during cutting. The blade and presser feet are independently actuated by plungers, which are slidable in a casing mounted on the sewing machine used to sew the tape onto the upper component. The plungers are provided with magnetic cores, and separate coils around the cores are energized in response to signals from photosensors in the work surface of the sewing machine to effect tensioning of the tape, followed by cutting at the edge of the upper component. Springs in the casing around the plungers return the plungers to a rest position, and the tape tensioning and cutting operations are repeated at each component edge.
