摘要： A washer (100) comprising wadding material and having an aperture (104) extending therethrough is disclosed. The wadding material is compressed at least around the periphery (102) of the aperture (104). The compressed wadding material is sufficiently elastic such that, when fitted to upholstery together with a tuft, the dimensions of the aperture may increase sufficiently to accommodate a tufting needle and then return to its original dimensions after withdrawal of the needle so as to, prevent disengagement of the tuft.

摘要： A method of making a quilt includes a batting including a heat activated adhesive coating each side or faces of the batting. The quilt covers are attached to the batting by sequentially placing the covers onto the respective batting faces and heating each cover and adjacent adhesive by moving a hot iron over each cover. The covers are connected to each by a plurality of spaced yarn or other suitable decorative connecting means which extend through the covers and batting to secure the batting in place and may form a desired decorative pattern. The inactive adhesive remains in the quilt or is removed by washing of the quilt. The batting with the inactive adhesive is provided as a commercially available product.

摘要： A method and apparatus for basting layers of flexible materials together such as for quilt making includes a spacing member, such as a grid, having openings therein is disposed on a support surface. A backing member or first flexible member is operatively secured to the support surface and a second member disposed over the first flexible member. Other layers are then placed over the second flexible member and, in the case of quilt making, there would typically be just three layers. A basting gun having a hollow needle is then utilized by pushing the hollow needle through all of the layers of flexible material and into one of the openings in the spacing member. Then the basting tool is utilized to force the first end of the plastic fastener through the hollow needle so that this first end of the plastic fastener is on one end of the flexible members and the second end of the plastic fastener is on the other side of the flexible members whereby the flexible members are held together by the plastic fastener. This process is repeated at various places on the flexible layers until they are held together sufficiently so that they can be permanently sewn together.

摘要： Elementary patterns are sewn in a sewing machine wherein the work can be fed by increments T. The making of a pattern involves repeatedly moving the work in and counter to the feed direction between starting the final needle penetration points which are spaced apart a distance nT wherein n is a whole number exceeding one. This results in the making of several continuous thread legs each having a length nT which can exceed, at least slightly, the maximum bight range of the needle and each extending all the way between the starting and final penetration points. In order to form a second elementary pattern which intersects the first pattern, the work is fed to move the needle to an intermediate penetration point, for example, midway between the starting and final penetration points, and the work is then fed to position the needle at the starting penetration point of the second pattern. One or more stay stitches are formed at the starting and/or final penetration point of each elementary pattern in order to increase the amount of thread in the pattern and to reduce the likelihood of deformation of the work under the action of tensioned thread legs.

In the method, a button core member is set on the back side of a trim cover assembly comprising a top cover member, a wadding and a wadding cover, and the button core member is covered by a reinforcing member. The peripheries of the button core member are then pressed and heated to weld the top cover member, wadding, wadding cover and reinforcing member around the button core member to one another into an integral body and, at the same time, to form a deep-valley-shaped recessed portion in the surface of the top cover member around the button core member.

摘要： An upholstery machine for the tufting of buttons within cushions wherein a needle picks up a string loop which is attached to a lower button and is then caused to penetrate the cushion. The needle is withdrawn and the string loop secured to an upper button. A button feeding mechanism is utilized which comprises an enlarged, elongated coil spring. The coil spring supports a single lower button with its attached loop of string at each coil of the spring thereby forming a row of the button assemblies. The inner end of the coil spring is attached to a power source which is to incrementally rotate the coil spring to discharge a single button assembly from the free outer end of the coil spring at a selected instant. The discharged button assembly is to be engaged with the needle. The power source includes appropriate gearing mechanism to reverse rotation of the coil spring to facilitate the loading of the coil spring with the button assemblies.

A cutting edge is provided on said jaw members for cutting the tying material when the knot is tightened.

The tufting buttons have internally threaded shank portions, and screws are threaded into such shank portions to secure the padding to a frame. A methods of producing an upholstered item of furniture that utilizes a flexible plate which is substantially flat in the nonflexed state and which is flexed to and held in a desired curvature in the completed item of furniture. The plate is upholstered in the substantially flat, non-flexed state. Thereafter the upholstered plate is flexed to a desired curvature and secured in its flexed state.
