    • A frictional feeder for paper stacks has a frictional conveyor belt that receives a paper stack of paper sheets from above and conveys individual paper sheets of the paper stack in a conveying direction of the feeder. A curved support is positioned above the frictional conveyor belt at a rearward end of the paper stack, viewed in the conveying direction, and at a slant relative to a plane of the paper sheets of the paper stack.     • A sheet feeding mechanism including a singulating assembly and mechanism for accumulating sheets in a stack adjacent the singulating assembly. The singulating assembly comprises a retard roller and a guard adjacent thereto. The retard roller has a first bearing surface at a lower position. A mechanism is provided for feeding single sheets from the stack past the bearing surface of the retard roller and beneath it.     • A device for feeding sheets of a recording medium from a stack to an office machine, having movable elements which are moved by way of driven continuously rotating traction devices in the feed direction over the respective top sheet of the stack. The movable elements are supported by guide skids and are in contact with the top sheet under pressure to separate the top sheet from the second sheet of the stack beneath it and displace the top sheet with respect to the second sheet in the direction of feed.     • A retard module in a mail separator having a floating, middle idler to change the ingestion angle of the mail separator. The retard module further has a downstream idler, an upstream pulley driven by a motor, and an endless belt forming a loop around the idlers and the pulley to provide a retarding force against a feed module. The downstream portion of the retard belt and the belt of the feed module form a nip to ingest incoming mail. The floating idler and the downstream idler are mounted on a bracket which, in turn, is pivotally mounted on a frame of the retard module. Initially, the ingestion angle at the nip is acute and thereby reduces damage to the incoming mailpieces. But when a thick mailpiece enters the separator, it causes the floating idler to move away further from the feed module and thereby increases the ingestion angle. A large ingestion angle allows thicker mailpieces to pass through the nip without substantially increasing the nipping forces. With the floating idler mounted together with the downstream idler on the pivoting bracket, the endless belt maintains substantially the same length regardless of the ingestion angles. This feature keeps constant tension on the belt and helps prevent the belt from slipping.

The abutment structure is provided with a slit for allowing a sheet or a set of sheets to pass therethrough, which slit is movable relative to the guide along the abutment plane, with a directional component transverse to the slit for peeling outer sheets abutting against the abutment structure off a stack of sheets in the holder. Further, a method for separating sheets from a stack is described. Because sheets are peeled off a stack without sliding relative to each other, they can be separated without hindrance due to friction between them.
