    • The invention relates to a transfer system (1) for items conveyed (3) piece by piece between a first conveyor unit (4; 11) and at least one other conveyor unit (5, 6) extending transversely or at an angle thereto. The conveyed items (3) are fed on a substantially horizontal conveyor plane (21 ) of a corresponding conveyor system (2). The transfer system (1) has a brake mechanism (35) which can be raised above and lowered below the conveyor plane (21) so that it can be selectively placed in and out of friction contact with the bottom face (36) of the conveyed item (3). It also has a lifting and conveying mechanism (25), the conveyor elements (27, 28) of which can be raised and lowered below the conveyor plane (21) so that the conveyed item (3) can be picked up from the first conveyor unit (4; 11) and transferred onto one of the other conveyor units (5, 6) without jamming. A first positioning mechanism (44) for the raisable and lowerable brake mechanism (35) and a second positioning mechanism (45) for raising and lowering the lifting and conveying mechanism (25) are mechanically coupled in displacement and are linked to one another by a common first drive system (46) only.

    • The present invention relates to a disposable conveyor for use with an apparatus handling contamination-sensitive discrete items. The conveyor has at least one cavity, each cavity capable to carry at least one discrete item. The conveyor is adapted to be mounted on the contamination-sensitive apparatus that, in operation, is capable to impart movement to the conveyor for displacing the conveyor, and its cavities, along a predetermined path. The present invention also relates to a method for transporting discrete items in a machine performing production runs with different types of contamination-sensitive discrete items. The method involves installing a conveyor as described above on the machine and using it to perform a first production run with a first type of discrete items. The conveyor is then disposed of and a new conveyor installed on the machine, used to perform a second production run with a second type of discrete items, different from the first type.

    • The method and apparatus (10) for moving and positioning parts (150, 250, 350 or 450) on workpieces (160) is described. The apparatus includes a vibratory bowl (12), a conveyance and feed system and a positioning cylinder (82). The bowl aligns the parts and orients the parts using a gauge (16, 216, 316 or 416). The conveyance and feed system moves the parts through a conduit (34) using an escapement (44) to feed the parts one at a time to the positioning cylinder. The positioning cylinder has a pneumatic piston (90) with a piston rod (100) having an extension (102) and tip (104). An electromagnet (112) is mounted at one end of the positioning cylinder. When activated, the positioning cylinder extends the piston rod such that the tip extends into an opening (150D, 250D, 350D or 450D) in the part. The electromagnet is activated simultaneously and sends a charge down the piston rod which charges the extension which is constructed of a magnetic material. The part is held on the tip by the magnetic attraction to the extension. When the forward movement of the piston rod stops, the forward inertia of the part overcomes the magnetic attraction and moves the part off the tip to the workpiece.
