    • A motor vehicle is provided with an automatic transmission including a shift manipulating device having an automatic shift position and a manual shift position, and a shift control device which places the automatic transmission in an optimum gear position when the shift manipulating device is operated to the automatic shift position, and places the transmission in a desired gear position according to a shift command operation by a driver when the shift manipulating device is operated to the manual shift position. The cruise control system includes a target speed setting device which sets a target speed to which a vehicle speed is controlled under constant-speed cruise control, a vehicle speed sensor which detects a vehicle speed, a constant-speed cruise control device which controls an engine of the vehicle so that the vehicle speed detected by the vehicle sensor becomes equal to the target vehicle speed set by the target vehicle speed setting device, and a canceling device which cancels an operation of the constant-speed cruise control device means when the shift manipulating device is operated from the automatic shift position to the manual shift position, and the transmission is shifted to a different gear position, while the vehicle is running under constant-speed cruise control.

    • In a vehicular velocity controlling apparatus for an automotive vehicle, a vehicular velocity detector is provided to detect a vehicular velocity of the vehicle, a vehicular velocity controlling section is provided that controls a vehicular driving force of the vehicle to make a detected value of the vehicular velocity substantially equal to a set vehicular velocity previously set, a plurality of switches are provided which includes a first switch (SET/COAST switch) and a second switch (RESUME/ACCELERATE switch), each switch being enabled to be interlocked with a predetermined operation of at least one switching member at a position such as to match with a general vehicular occupant's sense of vehicular manipulation, and a set vehicular velocity modifying section is provided that modifies the set vehicular velocity in such a manner that the detected value of the vehicular velocity is set to the set vehicular velocity when at least one of the following conditions is established, when a time duration of the predetermined operation of the first switch is equal to or longer than a first predetermined time duration and the detected value of the vehicular velocity is lower than the set vehicular velocity and when the time duration of the predetermined operation of the second switch is equal to or longer than a second predetermined time duration and the detected value of the vehicular velocity is higher than the set vehicular velocity.

    • A process for the automatic regulation of the distance between a vehicle to be regulated and another vehicle is employed in a vehicle which has a distance regulating device and a braking system which is actuable by the distance regulating device. When the distance regulating device emits a brake actuation signal to the braking system, a brake control device actuates the brakes thereby regulating the distance between the vehicle to be regulated and the other vehicle. Prior to emitting the brake actuation signal, the distance regulating device emits a braking readiness signal to the braking system thereby causing the braking system to assume a braking readiness state. The distance regulating device emits the braking readiness signal when it detects, based on the travel and road conditions surrounding the vehicle to be regulated, that braking will occur shortly. Once the braking system is in the braking readiness state, it takes less time than usual for the brakes to actuate after the distance regulating device emits a brake actuation signal.
