    • A trapezoidal non-pneumatic tire ("TNPT") is integrally molded from a stiff, resilient elastomeric material with particular specifications, to form a unitary structure comprising outer and inner cylindrical coaxial members ("hoops"), the outer being wider than the inner. The outer hoop is supported and cushioned by a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart, planar rib members (ribs) and a planar central web member (web) which connects the hoops at their circumferential center lines. The web lies in a plane perpendicular to the rotational axis of the TNPT. The ribs extend axially along the inner and outer hoops, connecting them, and the edges of the ribs lie along the opposite faces of the web. The ribs are angled in the range from 15.degree. to 75.degree. to radial planes which intersect them at their radially inner ends, and the ribs on one side of the web are angled oppositely from those on the other. A rubber tread is secured to the outer surface of the outer hoop. The coaction of the structural elements of the TNPT provides a load-supporting structure which, in operation, is subjected to continuous compression and tensile forces as it travels over the ground. Deformation and buckling characteristics of the TNPT are derived from its unique trapezoidal shape which results in an interaction of the structural elements such that the outer hoop is not pulled under the wheel as much as the outer hoop would have been, had the shape of the TNPT been rectangular. The trapezoidal shape provides the TNPT with improved "handling" characteristics in hard turns without sacrificing a "ride" which is suprisingly similar to that of a conventional pneumatic tire.

    • A non-pneumatic tire for mounting on a rim having axially spaced annular mounting flanges. The tire is formed with a radially exterior tread surface having axially outwardly sloped side walls projecting radially inwardly therefrom and formed on their radially inwardly extremities with shoulders that nest against the radially outward edges of the mounting flanges. Retaining flanges then project radially inwardly therefrom for retention on the axially inner sides of the mounting flanges. The tread surface and opposite side walls cooperate to form a circumferential interior cavity which a latticework of webbing formed by axially extending interrupter webs which are spaced equidistance about such cavity and have an annular projecting circumferentially thereabout and connected with such axially projecting interrupter webs. The tread, sidewalls, flanges and webbing are all preferably constructed of resilient elastic material such as polyurethane and has a circumferential length approximately 10% less than the circumferential distance around the rim to thus provide an elastic constraining force after being stretched over the rim. Also, elastic endless belts or beads may be embedded in the retaining flanges to provide further securing force maintaining the tire on such rim.

    • A dynamic steerable spring for axially mounting for supporting a compressive load as it would experience as a vehicle wheel, the load from such vehicle being distributed being evenly transferred to a spring hub, as a replacement for a conventional pneumatic or non pneumatic tire. The spring is preferably manufactured from a single flat sheet of a spring steel type material that is formed into a circular disk that is cut by identical equally spaced radial slots from the disk circumference to a radial distance from the disk center, that is the spring hub wherethrough radially spaced lug bolt holes are formed, with the disk elements between the slots being identical and each terminating in essentially a rectangular end portion. The flat disk is fitted between opposing male and female dies, or the like, that are moved together to bend the disk into the spring where the elements, spaced at equal distances from the hub and bent outwardly from the hub plane, and are then curved to where the finger portions extend across the hub plane. A pair of springs can be joined at the hubs, with the lug holes aligning and the finger end portions interdigitating to form a dual steerable spring. The single or dual spring can receive one or more non-elastic hoops fitted over and under the fingers, and the spring fingers can receive an elastomeric cap formed therearound, and an elastomeric side can be formed around the elements above the hub to form the wheel.

    • A wheel and tire assembly for a vehicle, including a solid rubber tire, and a wheel body, one or both edges of which are provided with a circumferential groove for receiving a retaining ring for the solid tire. In order to be able to repeatedly mount the solid tire with a sufficiently reliable seating, there is inventively proposed to provided the solid tire with a base having a width such that when the retaining ring is omitted, the tire extends slightly into the region which would otherwise be occupied by the retaining ring. Accordingly, when the retaining ring is inserted, the base of the tire must be slightly elastically deformed, thus assuring a secure seating of the tire on a wheel rim therewith.

    • A solid rubber tire comprised of rubber or plastic having elastomeric properties has a bottom layer and a tread portion connected to the bottom layer. A reinforcement structure for the bottom layer is provided in the form of a textile reinforcement element or a metal reinforcement element. The reinforcement structure is a wound overlay having at least one reinforcement layer which is produced by winding the reinforcement element in a plurality of windings so as to extend over at least 20% of the axial width of the bottom layer. The reinforcement element can be a cord, wire or cable. The reinforcement element may also be a cord material strip having individual reinforcement members arranged in parallel. The reinforcement members can be textile or metal reinforcement members in the form of cord, wire or cable. A method for producing the solid rubber tires is disclosed.
