    • A wheel and solid rubber tire assembly as provided with a metal wheel having a predetermined diameter and a cylindrical rim around the periphery of the wheel. The rim has a predetermined narrow width. A soft narrow layer of rubber is secured to the narrow rim and has a first diameter and a first width at the first diameter approximately equal to the narrow width of the rim. The soft layer has a second predetermined diameter larger than the first diameter. A wide wear layer of solid rubber, having a width that is significantly greater than the width of the narrow layer, is bonded to the narrow layer at the second diameter. The wear layer has a predetermined maximum outer diameter that is larger than the second diameter of the inner soft layer. The wear layer has a hardness greater than the hardness of the soft narrow layer. The movement of the soft inner layer upon compression is increased per pound of impact so that a smoother ride is provided.

    • A wheel for a powered vehicle operating along a hard brittle surface is equipped with cleats 21 having non-metallic wear tips 31 mounted upon a metallic base 36 welded to the wheel circumference 10. The material forming the wear tips 31 has density and hardness insufficient to chip or erode the brittle work surface but of sufficient toughness for demolition of solid wastes. An elongate bracket in a medial portion 26 of the wear tip and base have complimentary portions for attachment of tip to base in a twist resisting connection. An adhesive bond unites the tip and base in one embodiment, FIGS. 4-7, and mechanical couplings unite the parts in others, FIGS. 7-13. Certain embodiments, FIGS. 8-13, have provisions for readily releasable locking of the parts for field replacement of worn cleats.

    • A tire comprising a body constructed to deform resiliently under load and a tread provided on the body. The tread comprising a plurality of raised portions (29) disposed in circumferential relationship and defining grooves (49) therebetween.
