    • A tape printing apparatus compares a back-side background region of print data to be previously printed and a front-side background region of print data to be subsequently printed upon receipt of plural print data including background. If they are different, the tape printing apparatus creates a front-side color mixture tolerance region and a back-side color mixture tolerance region based on the front-side background region and the back-side background region, respectively, so that the front-side color mixture tolerance region and the back-side color mixture tolerance region are arranged continuously. The apparatus sets cut positions at a front edge border and a back edge border of each print data and cut the tape off at those portions while carrying out full-color print on the tape based on respective print data.

    • The invention provides high-speed and high-quality printing when the vertical and horizontal resolutions of print data to be printed differ from the vertical and horizontal resolutions which a printer can process. A table is provided, in which the relationship of position in each printing pass of each of a plurality of pins aligned in the vertical direction of a printing head to a plurality of raster lines in a predetermined range to be printed is examined, whereby the pins aligned in the vertical line to be actuated in each printing pass are determined based on the relationship of a position between each of the pins and each of the raster lines. The table serves as a raster-line/pin-relationship table. A printer driver receives print data from a print-data forming unit, consults the raster-line/pin-relationship table, and actuates the pins for each printing pass according to the raster-line/pin-relationship table.

    • An unattended printing system in which the operator keys in a page line count defining the number of lines to be printed on a page from codes derived from a shift register memory which is automatically loaded from a pack feed magnetic read/recorder. Logic is provided which, in the event that the text being played out does not equal a full page, automatic indexes or carrier returns will be generated to cause the page to be fed such that the printing mechanism is then in alignment with the first line of the next page. While page feeding occurs the memory is also automatically cleared; a new card is fed and reading of new codes into the shift register initiated. In addition, in the event that the margins on the machine which is being used for playout differ from the margins which were used during source recording, in the event that a fewer number of lines of text result, the proper number of indexes for this fewer number of lines to cause proper alignment on the next page will be output. Further, in the event that the margins are changed such that the lines being printed out on the printer are shorter than those originally recorded, proper indexing for this greater number of lines to place the following page in proper alignment will be output provided that the total lines of text output do not exceed the page count entered. In the normal case line endings will have been determined and the margins will not be changed to prevent possible systems stoppage for hyphenation decisions.

    • The apparatus incorporates a printing composer interconnected with a magnetic card recording and reproducing unit, and having telecomunication facilities. Provision is made for composing operations, including justification of printed information according to predetermined line lengths, centering, flush left, and flush right. The composing capabilities are in addition to basic recording and playback functions of the apparatus. Several modes of operation are possible. In a Record mode, characters and functional information entered by a keyboard produce data signals that are supplied to the magnetic card unit for recording in individual tracks on a magnetic card record media, each track being associated with a printed line on a document that is concurrently printed. During a Playback mode, data signals previously recorded in the individual tracks on the magnetic record card are sensed and applied to the printer to produce a printed document automatically. Neither the Record nor the Playback modes contemplate justification procedures. In a Justify Record mode, provision is made for recording characters and recognizing spaces as they occur during the printing of a document, compiling justification information to produce lines of predetermined length, and recording the justification data in association with the individual lines. In a Justify Playback mode, the previously recorded justification data is recognized and used during subsequent sensing of data signals to effect proper interword spacing in order to produce justified lines of printed copy.

    • A point of sale printer includes a magnetic reader for processing transactions and payment by check at a checkout point of a retail establishment. The printer includes a magnetic or MICR reader located at a predetermined point on the printer's document travel path and a print head located at the same point on the document travel path but laterally offset from the MICR reader to allow the printer to print customer receipts and a journal as well as reading MICR information from checks and endorsing the check after it is cleared. A pressure pad is used with the magnetic read head of the MICR reader which utilizes a pressure film which flexes when a document is inserted between the magnetic read head and the pressure film to provide a spring loading force on the magnetic read head while still allowing the document to be moved smoothly past the magnetic read head. A method for processing checks using the printer utilizes bidirectional motion of the check along the document travel path to magnetize the MICR information, read the MICR information and print the endorsement on the check.

    • A system and method are disclosed for providing vertical decimal point alignment in columns of textual characters wherein each level of the column includes a group of textual characters including a decimal point. This alignment is automatically provided regardless of the number of characters to the left or right of the decimal point in each group. The system includes a keyboard connected to generate codes for input into a recirculating memory. Control circuitry responsive to the keyboard generation of a decimal tab control code causes subsequently entered text codes to be stored in the memory in a contiguous group. A backspace code is automatically stored in the memory as each of these text codes is stored. The backspace codes form a contiguous group that precedes the first of said subsequently entered text codes. A printer connected to the memory backspaces as each backspace code is entered into the memory. A keyboard generated decimal point code is input into the memory as a text code, but no further backspace codes are stored in the memory corresponding to the decimal point code or to text codes entered after the entry of the decimal point code. Upon keyboard generation of a field-end code (such as a carrier return or tab), the character codes, including the decimal point, are printed. A plurality of groups of characters, therefore, may be entered into the memory in this manner to allow vertical alignment of the decimal points.
