    • A method of and apparatus for the automated manufacture of a liner of a cargo container has a work area (35) over which tubular plastics material (15) may be drawn out, for forming the liner. A shuttle (39) is disposed between the layers (18, 19) of the material and is maintained stationary as the material is drawn out, until a portion of the liner (15) to carry an attachment is disposed over the shuttle (39). The shuttle provides a counter-force for the bonding of the attachment (23) (such as an access pipe) to the liner and also serves to hold apart the upper layer (18) of the material from the or each other layer during the bonding operation. The shuttle may have rollers (41) which run on an internal surface of the liner material and may be maintained stationary with respect to the work area by magnets (52, 53) on the work area (35) and the shuttle (39) respectively. Following the drawing of a sufficient length of material while holding the shuttle stationary, the drawn length may be welded across (FIG. 9) to form and end panel for the liner and severed from the remaining material, with the shuttle (39) disposed in the remaining material.

    • Methods and apparatuses for inserting flexible bags and other liners into open packaging containers. One or more engagement heads engage and position the flexible liners in preparation for their insertion into open containers using an insertion assembly. One or more of the engagement heads are preferably made with vacuum heads that are movable to open the liner for the insertion assembly. A cuffing assembly can be included for cuffing the open end of the liners over the top edges of the open containers. Clamping assemblies can be included on the cuffing assembly to facilitate holding the liners during insertion and cuffing. The use of an engagement assembly, insertion assembly, and cuffing assembly which are independently driven helps to provide greater speed and operational flexibility.

    • A core panel or box of rigid plastics microporous foam is provided with parallel spaced passages or thin grooves and is placed within an envelope or bag of flexible multi-layer barrier film impervious to the passage of gas. The bag includes an integral evacuation tubular portion which is releasably coupled to an evacuation nozzle connected by a manifold with solenoid valves to a vacuum pump. After air is substantially evacuated from the foam core and the bag to collapse the bag against the foam core and into the grooves, a vacuum sensor operates a computer which controls the valves for checking the vacuum level within the bag and for optionally admitting an additive gas. Closely spaced grooves within opposite sides of the foam panel provide for bending the evacuated panel, and a thin layer of foam is applied to the outer surface of the vacuum insulated panel to provide a protective outer surface.
